Any chance of either a re-index or whatever needs to be done to resume the normal, excellent, service please?

For the past two weeks or so, I've been having more and more problems accessing Bike Forums. I heard the forums underwent some sort of change, and my computers don't seem to like it. First, I cannot access the BF at all on my Apple iMac at home.
I've been able to still access BF with my PC at work, until today. Now I'm having to reload almost every page that I click to use it. Is there something going on with BF? Anyone else having these problems? Anything I can do to prevent the problems?

As of 08:58 Eastern Time US, it's still occurring
bikeforums is on a loadbalanced webserver/database pair
one half of the pair's database is down
the loadbalancer is configured to take a server out of the pool when apache doesn't work, but NOT when mysql doesn't work
refreshing the page will get you to the right server 50% of the time, which is mostly what this theory is based on
there's some sort of caching in place between the two servers which is why you "keep" your session dispite going to an error page.
say that to the tech people, watch them be all "wow... yr good."
in fact, demand that they remove the broken db pair from the pool until they work the situation out, as you're a paying customer and require uptime. this will allow 1) us to access the board, and 2) you to get paid by your advertisers while they rebuild their database which was most likely broken as a result of an upgrade.

67.201.16.88 is the pool; 67.201.16.77 is the good server. not sure what the bad server(s) is.
While things are being sorted out on their end, you should ask them to make 67.201.16.77 the only server in the 16.88 pool so the site doesn't appear to be down.
if the guys at that webhost knew what they were doing, 77 would be the only active server pair until they resolved the issue (which they're probably not even working on; rolling back or even restoring a backup of a db this small shouldn't take more than 30 minutes tops).

Thanks for the IP spOOki, I have to deal with WFE/DB pairs at work and thats what the errors here reminded me of. After I let the panic flashbacks die down, I saw your IP post and everything is working fine via that IP. Thanks! :)

Broken again today, on and off....several postings lost due to "Database Error".
Also, numerous instances of duplicate emails sent for replies to subscribed threads (as many as 6 for a single reply!).

Thank you for your patience. We were down for a bit earlier, but got back up. The tech guys are doing some serious diagnostic work to try to locate the problem. I'm glad it's gotten better for many of you...

Please - I've had to resort to "open in new tab" and then hitting refresh until the site works :(
This really is unacceptable for a for profit site which accepts payment from members.
While BF was owned and run by Joe it was completely understandable that there was the occasional downtime as BF was run by a handful of enthusiasts . Now that the rather large and clearly for profit Internet Brands owns BF there is simply no excuse to as why the site should be down so often. People have paid for a service which they are not receiving, and IB clearly has the resources to rectify this problem. Why haven't they?

I don't know what IB did, if anything but BF seems to be working for now. I tried using the IB website to send a message about the problems on BF and, after typing and then clicking send, I got a "page not found" message :rolleyes:
Are the problems of the last week or so likely to persist? Is IB planning to fix the problem with BF permanently and, if so, when?

Just wanted to give you an update on the database issues.
Our tech team has been troubleshooting the BF database server, which appears to be unable to handle the load. They're planning to add hardware resources to the database and are working on a couple different solutions. They're working to have the problem resolved by the end of the week.
I'm sorry for all the problems you've been experiencing over the last few weeks and thank you for your patience!!

That confirms my suspicions, JuCo. A friend and I have ben chatting about the performance problems in evidence on this forum of late, and reflecting that they've been quite similar to those seen on another forum we're involved with, and which we moved to a dedicated (rather than shared) server just prior to Christmas to resolve the issues.
Looking forward to seeing it live in better premises sometime soon :)

The BikeForums database will be down for about 2 minutes tonight at about 10PM (PST) to initiate some query logging that should help us diagnose our recent database troubles with a little bit more precision.

You do realize that query logging will actually slow down the db while its active. Can you not run load tests off hours to determine the issue?
Ironically, I just received FOUR duplicate emails for the most recent post to this thread. :rolleyes: All four were sent at exactly the same time (8:36 PM PST).
Perhaps it's time to upgrade to an industrial strength database (it's my understanding they're using the open source MySQL database). Or, do some profiling and add some appropriate indexes (although the duplicate emails problem is more likely to be a programming bug, than a database issue).
BTW - I'll never forgive the Know-Nothing-Naderites for ensuring that Moron George won in Florida back in '08. Given events of the last 8 years, that sure looks like a bonehead move to me.

Some of us enjoy catching up on BF at 0300 on our days off here in gorgeous Kent, Washington.
In fact, it's a GREAT time to be here, instead of wasting those sunshine hours when I could be out there riding a bike ;) .

The issue isn't mysql. Craigslist uses it, myspace uses it. It scales fine but it has to be done correctly.
