This is recurring problem that I get when I do crits or CX races. About two hours after the race is over I get cramping so bad that i am bent over puking. I throw up everything in my stomach, can't even hold down water. I also get the runs. It can last up to six hours.
I am wound pretty tight as a person, which I try to change by meditation. I cannot smoke pot or take other mind altering substances to change this.
I tried pepto Bismol before yesterdays race but it didn't help.
During the race, I went into VO2 on 3 maybe four occasions which tends to mean I will suffer a lot more after the race.

Has anyone had similar problems and how did ye deal with it?
It gets so bad that I may have to consider giving up racing if I can't find a solution.
Thanks.

Drink more water. See a doctor.

Drink more water? Slightly confused there... The doctor idea is a good one. See a sports physician. You could be eating too much before or during. Could be the sugar sources you are using...

A sports physician is a great idea, I am skeptical of doctors, not drinking enough water is definitely not part of the problem. I also posted this in the road racing section.

Mr Irish Pat,

I am pleased (well, sort of pleased) to say I too have experienced these exact symptoms after hard racing. The nausea is simply a sign that you have raced close to (or over) the limit of what you have trained for. To conquer this, I have simply adjusted my training to incorporate some twice-the-race-length hard sessions (I use Mr Friel's book and online coaching).

As to the cramps, mine appeared also after races. In my case, this was an eating thing - both not enough before, and not the right stuff afterwards. For me, using High5 Recovery Protein (w/ it's anti-cramping stuff) seems to really help. If I cramp on the bike, eating a gel seems to calm the cramps down within a minute or two.

Hope this helps, fixing this helped me to go from Cat4 to Cat3.

Regards,
Richard.

Thank you very much!!!
I am gonna order the recovery protein w. anti cramping immediately. I am confident it will work. I cannot be the only one in the world that this happens to, and, in general, I am very healthy otherwise,
thanks again.

I've lost hope.

Buy your way to fitness.

????

I train hard and get sick when I do Vo2, so instead of drinking Gatorade after a race I drink a protein shake that costs the same price, guess it's cheap to buy myself to fitness.
After competing in 7 races as a cat 5, I had enough points to upgrade to a 3 by doing combined 4/5 races. I was given a forced upgrade. I ate cliff bars during the races, that was buying up-grades, right??
I should just drink water and eat nothing before, during, or after races.

Maybe I'm a little passive aggressive, heh.
