Got to love it :D

I am house-sitting at Alki for the week for my brother. Yesterday I decided to drive up to Everett to pick up my Netflix movies and pay my rent. In the span of 35 miles (40 min) I drove through just about every conceivable type of weather I could. Sun, rain, sleet and then snow. Visa versa on the way back.

Ah variety is the spice if life.

Ii is great! That's why I came up here 3 years ago to get out of the PSW's dry heat. Despite growing up in the desert, I was born in New York and I have always enjoyed the cooler weather than the dry days. I cringe when we go through over a month without rain, though it is beautiful here in the summer. Helps that it's not 105 by 10am.

From Redmond Ridge to Woodinville I rode from snow still on the grass and slush on the roads, to just wet roads, to dry. It's amazing what 500' elevation and 10 miles distance will do for the weather around here. A friend in Lake City said he didn't get any snow all weekend; by the end of Saturday's squalls we had almost 5" up on the ridge. (Effectively keeping me from testing out my new wheel that I built Friday night )

Nice comment on this at the Bicycling Bis blog yesterday (with pics)...here's Gene's comment and pics on his blog:

I road out to the same area yesterday morning, early (in and around Tiger Mountain / Cougar mountain)...once I was a few hundred feet above sea level there was snow everywhere.

How did you miss the hail? Anyway, hope you had your sunglasses.

I always have to laugh when family and friends in other parts of the country say stuff like, "I've been watching the weather up there and it looks like you've had nothing but rain and clouds for weeks!"

I guess you have to spend some time here before you realize that weather forecasts for this region are useless, and any given day can have all of the above. Yes Summers are often consistently perfect, but Winter can be pretty nice too if you get outside at the right time of day. The micro-climates here are also amazing. We experience the same variety traveling around Whatcom and Skagit counties. Even in our own neigbhorhood. On Saturday morning our house had a couple of inches of snow on the ground (we're on top of a hill), but we walked six blocks down to a park by the Bay and no snow had fallen.

Yeah if you don't like the weather wait a minute it will change.

As the man on the radio said, "Weather forecasts on Kxxx are for entertainment purposes only; your actual weather can and will vary." Although once while living in Connecticut I drove through four different kinds of snow in roughly 30 miles. That was fun...

East Hill

I missed it  .

Mr. East Hill tells me that there was hail half an inch in diameter, topped with snow! He has frozen some of the hail in a baggie for me so that I can see what I missed when I get back with Mrs. stringbreaker's mixte frame.

Went out to see an overcast sky, got hailed on, rained on, then shone on. Whatever, I wasn't completely soaked, so I'm fine.

There was a 30 minute snow/sleet/rain storm last night on Redmond Ridge. Conveniently during the 30 minutes I was out riding to pick up dinner.

Don't forget the lightning and thunder, too. Yesterday was quite a day.

Yeah, the thunder was probably the first indication I shouldn't have rode my bike anyplace. :p

When I left work at about 4:30 yesterday it had just started raining and gusting a bit. 5 minutes later, as I was riding down Stewart it started to snow! And then rain! And then nothing besides a bus driver trying his best to intimidate me (yelling and such -yes, I reported him)! And then by the time I got to Alaskan Way, it was snowing again. Over the lower West Seattle bridge, HAIL. HARD, hard, hail. It HURT. Got a little slippery too, but not bad. It was dang cold. Took me a while to warm up after I got home. But I was happy because it was a fun ride overall! :D

...I was stopped at a stopsign at Columbia & Western and some idiot behind me honked at me (like I was supposed to ride out infront of cross-traffic or something)...I just pointed to the stopsign on our left for a few seconds without turning around. No more honks. Mariner/summer traffic begins!...

I beat the hard rain in this morning and then was watching the blinding sun for a while but between when I admired the sun and switched to my bike shoes to run out for some lunch, back to pouring rain. Argh. Eat or stay dry? Eat or stay dry?

Normally I feel I can depend on the NWS hourly weather forecast (it's usually at least directionally correct) top pick the least-bad part of the day. Yesterday (Sunday) I dashed out and did a quick 15 miles first thing in the morning because it was "supposed" to rain all afternoon....it ended up being dry and even sunny at my house, almost all afternoon. In my disgust w/myself, I mowed the lawn...poor substitute for a bike ride.

HardyWeinberg

I was mowing the lawn in rainhat and sunglasses in 10-15 min sunbreak increments, then dashing into the garage for shelter from rain and/or hail as needed.

Was kinda neat today...while I had mild rain at the top of the hill (East Hill in Kent) when I left for work at about 12:30pm, it was sunny once I hit the bottom of the hill. By the time I reached work it was a bit overcast. Really was perfect weather for my commute as I typically ride in shorts and a long sleeve shirt of some type (today was my ASU Hockey Jersey).

Looking out about 4 or 5pm(not really sure on exact time), I was watching horizontal rain on the west side and nothing on the east side of our building, all while the sun was still shining. Really was a neat moment. Didn't last long. For those that were curious, the commute home was a nice 40 degrees at midnight.

I can't remember if it was Saturday or Sunday, but it was a weird day here in Bellingham. We were in the living room (which has windows out both the front and the back of the house) and we noticed it was raining - hard - in the back yard, but it wasn't raining at all in the front yard. So we go outside to check it out, and sure enough the front yard is dry while we can see it raining steadily in the back yard and over about half the house.

The really weird part is that it was sunny where it was raining in the back, while the front yard was overcast and dry.

I've seen it rain across the street before, but this was the first time I noticed it raining outside one window but not another!
