Since the xtra is supposed to be a snap-in-and-out, modular and interchangeable rack system, I'm wondering if there are published specs available so that others can make compatible bits.

I'm curious about tubing specs of the original V and H racks. I'm also wondering about the actual dimensions of those parts (how tall the V racks are when installed and how wide the H racks are, etc).

Another question I have that I'm having trouble answering via google image search is whether the snapdeck is tapered. The rear upright ports and the front upright ports are spaced differently. When the V racks are installed, do their top tubes run parallel (and then the rear down tubes taper in), or do the top tubes when viewed from above taper inward as they go back?

Does anyone out there with original xtracycle parts have the time/inclination to take some detailed measurements and photos for all of us diy'ers? I'm brainstorming some custom rack ideas, but I want to maintain compatibility with other xtracycle parts that I'll buy.

THanks!

Larry - if you get that info together and send it to me I'll post in online so any DIY types can use it.

I'm hoping it gets posted here by someone. Otherwise I'll have to wait for my friend to take delivery of his BD and longtail kit and I'll measure them myself (and post them online in a google-accessible place :-)

have you emailed xtracycle and asked for a spec sheet or measurements?

The Snapdeck is indeed tapered, being wider in the front. I'd like to make some Vracks that are 29er capapble.

Not yet, but it's on my to-do list :-)

If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'm looking to make custom snapdecks for my Dummy and will try to remember to post this info.

I e-mailed them quite some time ago for this info.

The dimensions for the V-Racks, from which the FreeLoaders ($(79.00 each side) hang and which are included in the big Dummy LongTail kit but otherwise sold separately (58.00 for a pair) are 15" high and 30 " from out side of tube inserts (1"diameter) at the base and 26" from curve to curve across the top. (not the most accurate measurements but they are an odd shape) THe Vracks insert into the Skyward looking opening on the rear of the frame. The FreeLoader bags are like a couple of big Burritos and you can fit things up to a foot wide in them. Otherwise the hang down from the racks about 15" and hit about 1/2 way down the wheel protecting your load from the spokes.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Laughter

Sorry, I just re-read the post and realized that I completely misunderstood it. Imagine my embarassment...

Thanks, this is a good start. So height of the v racks is 15" and the tubes are 1" - or maybe the frame sockets are 1" -- i'll have to measure that ;-)

Yeah. Actually the outside diameter is 7/8 inches IIRC. I'd verify that with a set of calipers though.

I made my own tubing with EMT conduit that I bent. Not pretty, but functional until I get some real V-Racks. I suck at tube bending...
