Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just signed up Tricia and myself for Seattle to Portland (http://www.cascade.org/EandR/stp/index.cfm). YIKES! What with add ons and bus rides and parking and 2 hotel nights (not counting motels we'll use on the drive up and back) it came to almost $700. And that's before commemorative jerseys and mid point lodging.
I started signing us up and it just got out of hand, but it was too late to stop once I'd hit the first button. At least they provide food on the ride. And I'm sure gas will be back to a buck a gallon by this summer, so that won't be an issue.
We went on this last year and I guess I must have paid in small increments somehow. I don't remember it hurting as much.
But is was a grand ride, and if the weather is as nice I hope to enjoy it just as much.
Any other 50+ folks going? We should post jerseys so we might actually see each other!

of course!
I dream of doing this ride someday. (I used to live in Portland) It sounds great but wow, that is spendy for a two-day event. I'm sure it will be well worth it, though
Wow, I didn't know that ride was that expensive. My wife and I put on a 3-day ride for the American Lung Association on the Central Coast of California, May 16-18, that uses many of the roads that Team High Road (formerly T-Mobile) train on. The ride includes transportation from Bakersfield to the ride start and back, commemorative jersey, 2 nights hotel accommodations, meals with dinner Saturday night at the Madonna Inn and SAG support and stops for only a $65 registration fee and $525 in donations and/or pledges. There is also a raffle for a team signed Team High Road jersey. It's called the Lung Ride here's the link to the website: http://www.mrsnv.com/evt/home.jsp?id=1692 (http://www.mrsnv.com/evt/home.jsp?id=1692).

It's really $85 a person. But add parking, two nights motels, transport back to the start, and it's for 2 people. It adds up. Heck, $230 is lodging. So it's not a bad deal at all, just a shock when you get to the bottom line.
This looks like a lot of fun. Hmmmm... not sure I can get my husband off his hybrid by then. Do some folks ride bikes other than road bikes?

I signed up for it last year, but I didn't go. When you add in airfare it gets really expensive. I was going to make a short week of it but I couldn't get away from work for that long, and my wife would kill me (mostly because I lived in Seattle for a while and still had an old girlfriend there). Just to go for the ride didn't seem like it was worth it. I was able to sell my number easily as people are desperate to do the ride at the last minute.
I will be doing the ride with my son (age 28) and some of his friends. We have rented a classroom in a school in Centralia, Washington for our group. It's a fund raiser for them - we will use their gym showers, they provide a spaghetti feed, and a pancake breakfast.

There is every kind of bike you can imagine. And every level of rider. It's a long way, but it's about as easy a 200 miles as you'll ever find.

There's a current thread going over on the Long Distance forum regarding ideal equipment for the STP.

I think the one-day riders ride go-fast bikes. If you're riding with the folks doing it in two days, you'll see a little bit of everything. I had a friend do it on a very cheap hybrid last year.
