Southern California - Is This A Climbing Bike? You seen this guy? (Upland area)

When I get a chance to ride during the week, I'll ride up and down the top section of Euclid in Upland. I'm doing about 9 mph when I pass this guy. He's humping and pumping up the hill, but he's getting there. Once I rode by and said," that must be a heck of a workout!". He just said ,"Oh Yeah!!" and kept going.

I saw him today so I pulled out the handy dandy cellcam for a quick shot. I wonder if he's worried about the weight of his climbing bike?:D

There is another guy that rides a strange bike (9) Looks more like a elliptical trainer on wheels. This guy goes up the steep hill by the chapel on this thing!:eek:

I was on an SFVBC ride once and this guy with us was on an internal gear cruiser type bike that weighed almost 40 lb. He was wearing bermuda shorts and a plaid button up shirt. He kept up just fine, although he avoided slowing down and speeding up like the plague.

I checked out this guy's bike, single speed like an old beach cruiser!:eek:

I do remember getting dropped on a hill on the Rosarita/Ensenada ride by some guy on a cruiser with flipflops and bermudas. It had to be Lance!:D

I've never seen your boy, but I noticed that there are quite a few regulars out in that area. There's the stocky guy that commutes on his mtn bike near Mountain and Foothill without a helmet; there's the overweight roadie that is always hauling ass (he looks like a couch potato, but I'm postitive he will rip my legs off anyday); and my favorite is the petite girl that rides on 16th while on her cellphone.

I've been dropped by my share of mountain bikes and beach cruisers but i'm cool with that. :D The best was the possible retro grouch who flew up GMR with platform pedals and big shiny upright handlebars. :)

W3rd. :D You should have seen my fully loaded Camelbak that i used to take with me on weekend rides... Damn thing weighed ~20-25 lbs. And i'm the smallest person in my group of friends i regularly ride with.

If you don't have a separate training and racing bike, it makes sense to optimize the weight of the bike and still use it for training. You don't get less of a workout, you just go faster. If you do have separate bikes, then there is less reason to try to optimize the weight of the training bike. I don't worry about the weight of my old racing bike/new training bike (TCR). I swapped many of my lightest components to my new bike (Tarmac) and put on whatever I had laying around back on the TCR. It is still fairly light but not nearly as light as it was or could be, and several pounds heavier than the Tarmac...

My bike is in no way LITE. I use Velocity Deep V's (rims) which are usually about 100 grams more than most rims. That's just the rim. I have lots of buds that spend money on climbing wheels and such. If I want to train, I save money but cutting out the Ben and Jerry's!:D

Second year I did Ride Around the Bear, I took an hour off my time. Same bike, same wheels! It's not the bike either way! Well as far as weight in my case. Though I do climb better on my Cannondale than on my Lemond, but that's cause it's stiff!

That'd be Tim, the retired postman. He has touring gears on that bike and yes, he passes people on hills!

You weren't the guy that I saw, but I do recognize where that picture was taken. I get goosebumps whenever I go through that tunnel now because a buddy of mine lost his life riding his motorcycle there not long ago.

Sorry to hear about the friend.:( When I ride thru it, I hug the wall. It's scary and idiots do 70 miles an hour thru the tunnels. I try to pick up the pace and get thru before cars arrive, but sheesh, it aint happening!:o

The sign says '25' but I've seen cars come skidding around the corner going uphill!:eek:

I'll bet that bike is a John Deere. There's one just like it parked sometimes at the school where I work. Every time I see it, I feel compelled to lift it by the back of the saddle. It must weigh close to 50 lbs.

Because it's all about momentum, I usually pass quite a few people. Not because of fitness, because it's easier to push and fly up the hill then it is to go slow and grind.

Yeah, I hug the walls of those tunnels too. I wish they would at least have some sort of lighting in there because I never think of bringing the taillight with me when I head up there.
