Road Cycling - Why would anyone want white bibs?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I see that Castelli has white bibs. Why would you want to wear white bibs?

Single folks wanting to attract members of the opposite sex?
Exhibitionists?
Flashers?
Cylists who don't sweat or ride in the rain?
Cyclists who ride in winter who want to be stealthy?

White bibs make your tan look darker and sexier and...
So the sweat stains show more prominently?
white bar tape is Retro? mine is just dirty.

Because they're on sale for under $100 at sierra trading post? Seems like a good enough reason to me.

And why are the on sale at Sierra Trading Post?
'Cuz no one wanted white bibs. Or not very many wanted white bibs.

You can't go wrong for $89 though... I could deal with the flash for the cash! :p

OK, then, it's ignorance or pride, and I mean neither in a negative sense. Who cares if you have white shorts on? Not like they show anything that dark shorts don't. And I think that cyclists, in our lycra and spandex, have little room to concern ourselves with vanity. Function follows form.

I have two pairs of gray bibs and when I sweat...down there...it's really noticeable. Black shorts/bibs don't show anything. Maybe that's why most people wear black. :p
Would sweat on white shorts/bibs be more or less noticeable?

Wearing black shorts means you always have somewhere to wipe greasy fingers!

wearing white shorts shows you're good enough to have someone else do your greasing

Not me. I'll stick with black or perhaps blue. I don't care if they give them away.

... And Sierra is a liquidator. I think most people agree with Ron!
if you're wearing a white bib or shorts, won't you look like you're riding in your underwear?
i find this whole bib thing in general to be a bit dicey. never tried them myself, but i see the models in the catalogs - in theory, the optimal look! - and they all look a bit goofy. i can only imagine what i'd look like in a bib. but hey, to each his own. :)
You will wear black lycra but not white?
I understand, to most people, I look pretty stupid to start with. Exchanging white for black isn't going to do me much more harm.
And no, they aren't see through when you sweat. They stay fairly clean... unless you get blood on them... ;)

Rippo, are you aware that you wear a jersey over the bibshorts, so to the casual observer they look like shorts that don't sag?

If the guys in that show Queer Eye dressed a cyclist they might select white bibs.

If you are in first place in the world championship, you wear white bibs. Having seen both Cipollini and Bettini race, they didn't "show through"...maybe the domestiques do all the sweating? :D
Or they wear really good shorts... ;)

And black lycra doesn't look gay?

But white is lighter...
Carbon bibs?
I guarantee it will happen at some stage! :)
And then I'll get the white carbon... to match my Dogma :D

Anyone remember the radiometer. Small glass bulb in which a set of rotor vanes are suspended in a vacuum. on each vane one side is white, the other black. In strong light the vane spins as if the black side is being pushed.
I have just patented cycling wear(UK2340980396583429879234534) with white front and black back sections that has been shown to have a clear advantage on hot sunny days. It is proven to be at least 10 times more effective than aero socks.
Cheers,
Ed

better be careful with that, your legs might get stuck at the top of the pedal stroke
Rippo, are you aware that you wear a jersey over the bibshorts, so to the casual observer they look like shorts that don't sag?
oh! i didn't know that. i've just seen them in the catalogs with the bibs and undershirts...that would explain why i've never actually seen anyone wearing them. turns out they are, i just can't tell.
that changes everything. except they're expensive as heck. i'll stick with the sag for now. but thanks for setting me straight.

Could not a solution be underwear.. Some people wear white swim trunks..That would get the Nazi's attention.
they make underwear with chamois in them, so that you can ride in ordinary shorts. why not just wear those and forget the shorts altogether? and think of the weight savings...

My collegiate team is going to be buying new uniforms soon. We're definitely considering pure white full coverage skin suits. B to the L-ing.

O.K. Pay attention.
I don't know, or even care, who would wear white bibbies. If you want the bling bling factor, go for it. Just lube your bike with white lithium grease and White Lightning and anything else that is white so it won't leave ugly fingerprints all over your shorts when you wipe your hands on your butt after repairing a broken chain.
If you sweat through your white shorts you run the risk of having the world find out that you are a real man. Big deal.
If you aren't a real man, go ahead and wear undies under your white shorts. Just make sure that they are red bikini briefs so the whole world can clearly see that you are a girly boy.
Modesty is for wimps.
Castelli makes some of the of the cushiest and best-fitting shorts in the world. Anyone who would even think of putting BVDs under them should have their head examined. Or removed.
No undies under bike shorts for any reason, ever. Have you got it yet?
Good.

Swim trunks, my aunt fanny!

WRONG!! My Voler (http://www.velowear.com) bibs cost less than the PI shorts I used to buy.
Can't afford Castelli or Assos or the other "expensive" brands until I get another job. :crash:
