The pear is a better tasting fruit than the apple. It also has a nicer consistency in the mouth which may contribute to its superior flavor.

I must disagree. If pears were so great, apple pie would not be the best thing ever made.
As it is, apple pie is the best thing, therefore apples > pears. Pears > oranges though.

You have to have pears to run a fruit stand. If you went to run a fruit stand with apples, they would just laugh at you. I know it's not fair, but that's how the business works.

I think that the variety of apple makes a huge difference. A good apple beats a good pear in my book.

a cooked pear =\= a raw pear

a cooked apple =\= a raw apple

Therefore a cooked apple can not be be compared to a raw pear.

Regardless, have you ever enjoyed a nice pear chutney? I suspect a pear pie would be very good indeed. Though, i find it ironic that an apple must be spiced and cooked in order to reach the fantastic consistency of a pear.

Pear still wins.

Apple. While I dearly love the taste of pears, they have such a small window of ripeness that I tend to get to the pears after they should have been eaten ...

Asian pears are about the only pears that I can handle, but they are superior to essentially any apple. I had a fantastic batch of macoun apples back in central NY or maybe (maybe) Ontario, truly life-changing, but I've only seen that variety once since, and the ones I (re-) tried did not live up to the memory of the original macouns.

That's not really an apples to apples, so to speak, comparison. Eat a pie apple (pre-pie) next to your favorite pear and see which one you reach for a second helping of. The sugar butter etc... in the pie help those apples a lot.

each to their own...but I love apple pie, therefore apples>pears.
On occasion though, a pear poached in port wine is quite a nice way to end a nice meal.

it is all about potential...and apples have more potential (in general as some of them fail miserable at making pies).

I will agree to this:

OH not even close. The pear is a travesty of a fruit.. nasty consistency, weak flavor, and I have tried many different varieties... I will take an apple any day of the week.

You never hear anybody say "a pear a day keeps the doctor away".

Keep going until you get to the asian pears. But yeah a bosc in the pannier is not going to last to lunchtime.

Pears can cure cancer, but the pharmaceutical companies don't want you to know that.

I have tried Asian pears... i have actually tried Asian pears in Asia... while light years better than Caucasian?? Pears... they still pale in comparison to a good Braeburn or Fuji.

jsharr

The Red Delicious used to be exactly that thing described by it's name. However, the hubris of the apple growers ruined that apple. Through selective manipulation of the variety, we ended up with a grainy, flavorless travesty that looked great on the outside. Then the growers got government assistance to cut down/burn/destroy the worthless trees they created.

Apple taste is dictated by sugar content. Sugar content is dictated by sunlight on apple skin during growth. But I do like a sweet Granny Smith with a bit of feta and a nice crakcer.

The sugary juice of the Apple is easier to separate that that of the Pear. Ergo: We have more words for ethanol related beverages derived from Apples then from the lowly pear.

nekohime - I like the way you think...the curries of my youth often had both.

The curry and fruit thing stems from a different area and to describe this as simply as possible, imagine juicy and tender chicken served up with curried applesauce.

Damn... now I have a craving for curried chicken and apples.

Pink Lady FTW.

Somehow that really doesn't surprise me that your choice of an apple would be called "Pink Lady".

As far as apples and pears go...I have some homegrown organic pears that are absolutely amazing. Of course I am also partial to apples like the Fuji, Gala, Braeburn, and yes...sometimes even the Pink Lady.

As for deserts made with these...they are both really good in deserts. I have made some cobblers with pears, blackberries, blueberries, and peaches that I grew within 100 feet of my stove that are absolutely out of this world. Then again, a good homemade apple pie with a slice of extra sharp cheddar cheese melted across it is frickin awesome too. It's all in how you make it.

Oh, and I have also made some pear chutney with my mother that was really good. I like it with some dhaal or something.

depends on the pear and the apple.

I've had woody pears that weren't as good as good apples, and bad apples that are tasteless and mealy or tasteless and woody. Modern grocery store apples are selected too much for being shippable and not enough for juicyness or taste. Similar with pears-- good pears dissolve in your mouth and have to be eaten over the sink or outside.

I can't wait for the peaches to come in on the tree in my yard-- way better than in the store, but so juicy you have to pretty much pick them and eat them right away. I often spend a week or two drinking a 40 oz peach smoothie every day.

the best fruit is "local" fruit. by local, i mean i can drive to get it in less than a day there and back.

i like pears and apples, but prefer apples. i like Catawbas, Carolina Pippins and Winesaps.

I stopped eating apples here because the ones I was buying locally made my mouth itch :(. It's also hard to find anything other than a Fuji apple -- fine, but it's nice to have some variety.

As for pears, oranges, etc., Eddie Izzard has it right (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh5a0ucs8kQ).

Edit: I guess he talks about apples, too...

I like pears more than apples, but like apple pie more than pears. Which makes me wonder if a PEAR PIE would be any good.

I agree that oranges are the last of the whole fruits you mentioned. If you like oranges, but don't love them, then go w/ clementines -- they're 2nd only to pears.

slice o'pear + almond(s) + dark chocolate = yum
