Renting for the summer in San Jose

Well if everything lines up (and it seems like it will). I will be doing internship in San Jose this summer. Can anyone recommend a place thats not too expensive to rent within biking distance (less then 5 miles) of here:

Craigslist usually has better listings than the big corporate ran complexes.

Willow Glen is a good area not too far from there.

I work downtown not too far from your work.

Don't know the prices, but you might check around west San Jose or eastern Santa Clara. That's not that far from your work, and you can head out for some great riding along the foothills to the west. There are small apartment complexes right out Park Ave to the west. My Post Office covers the area on the other side of the train tracks from your work.
The Willow Glen area mentioned is not far south of where you'll be, and is a really nice area.

No. I liked implementing optimizing compiler, SSA, CSE, array killing good stuff. :) *shrug Even I was surprised at IR that was produced.

I love using the VMware virtual appliances. It will be interesting to see what Adobe has planned regarding virtual machines since we sell their software.

Yeah, looking forward to it. When I worked in Santa Clara and did my undergrad at Cal I had tons of fun riding in the hills.

Another area you might try is in my neighborhood, near Newhall and The Alameda. It's on the Santa Clara side of the freeway, but in central San Jose which makes it a bit less expensive than Santa Clara. Near Santa Clara University, Mission City Coffee Roasting company, and the Caltrain station. Easy biking access to where you're going to work.

Can you give more info? I used to live in San Leandro which was also described as "not the best of neighborhoods", never really had a problem.

If it were me, I would exhaust all other neighborhoods in San Jose before considering that one. I grew up in SJ and that was one of the areas you didn't go to unless you have to. The things you've heard of Gang activity are correct. Just on the the other side of 101 is fine, just on the other side of Capital Expressway is ok. Try looking in the south San Jose area. 101 corridor between Tully and Bernal Rd. Blossom Valley and Evergreen Valley are good neighborhoods. I grew up near Yerba Buena and McLaughlin

How much are you looking at for rent there? House or apartment? You might find an equivalent price around the north Willow Glen area, or in the zip codes my station covers, which runs to about 1/4 mile from where you'll be working. (We might deliver SanJoseBob's mail;))

Well whatever I can get for less then 1k a month and doesn't require 6 month lease or something. Since it's only for a duration of a three month internship.

Check with the people you're interning with. A lot of times companies, even if they don't supply intern housing, know some places or where the last set of interns stayed.

Well they setup account with internhousing.com, but I let it expire since I thought I already got a place. :(

Spent a few months there in 1989. Seemed okay to me back then. Don't know its status these days, but it should be fine. The local mall has a Lane Bryant so the area can't be that bad. If you mountain bike, Santa Teresa Park has a some decent, albeit exposed, trails.

Nope only road biking. Kind of scared of mountain biking. Which is funny considering I do crits on regular bases, and just got a motorcycle. Seems like a good location for road biking, I can take blossom hill road to Silver Creek Valley Road, and be out of the city in few short miles. :)

I live in Almaden Valley. Blossom Hill/Santa Teresa is not a bad area. Westfield Mall and Light Rail to Downtown are nearby. For road biking, Hicks, McKean, Bailey, Shanon, Hwy 9 are within riding distant. Compare to Story/King, it will be night and day.

It looks like a monthly pass for VTA would be $61.25, allowing unlimited use of all buses and light rail.
As far as riding out of the city, you're stuck in urban sprawl in most directions for a good number of miles, but the riding is still pretty good. You can always head west over the hills to the coast, and work your way around to another climb back over toward home. For riding with others, check out Almaden Cycle Touring Club.
