I am rebuilding an old Pinarello cyclocross bike. The hubs are WTB's with grease guards and are in very good condition. The freewheel is a Durace and is six speed. It had been set up with a SIS Deore XT shifter set on a flat bar. Did the old SIS set ups require a different chain? I bought what was called a six speed chain and it seems to shift just fine. However, when it is on the small chainring in the front, it appears to be rubbing slightly on the inside of the large chainring and crank. Do I need to switch to a more modern, narrower chain and if so, will a 7-8 speed SRAM or 9 speed SRAM work? I don't want to purchase several different chains if I can avoid it.

my 6sp 600EX SIS setup never rubbed, but you could try a 7sp chain. nashbar has them for dirt cheap if you want to try a generic. they also accept returns if its not what you want or doesn't work.

Any 7/8-speed chain will be perfectly satisfactory. It will be narrower than a true 6-speed chain.

Bet you're using a modern crank with 14 tooth difference. Won't happen on an old 52/42 set-up, but can on a 53/39. Narrower 7/8s chain might help. (Or a longer spindle :))

And there are plenty of gear options on your big ring so you can avoid the small/small combination.

Actually, my front combination is 48T and 36T with a rear freewheel of 13-14-15-16-17-18 and I've purchased a 14-16-18-21-24-28 to put on the back if I decide to change the corn cob that is on there. I'm picking up a 7-8 speed chain today.
