Just found out that construction on the last 2.5 miles of the Silver Comet Trail in GA will begin in May with expected completion by Labor Day. This will make a continuous 101 mile paved trail from Smyrna, GA to Anniston, AL. What a gem. The gap required a 6 mile road detour, which wasn't bad except for the dog problems I've heard about. All the same, it will be nice to have the whole route finished.

That is outstanding. The dog problem is why I carry pepper spray when I am going out that far.

Hopefully they will allocated some money to fix the rather nasty RxR crossings?
Or get the county or RxR to fix them, where ever the responsibility falls.

That's Great to Hear.. I haven't been on the Silver Comet this year yet because of being so busy. Mostly been riding Alpharetta Greenway (Close to home) and some of the Rode/trails around Gwinnett (Close to work)
Think I will ride the Silver Comet this weekend.. I see an early rise/ride this Saturday

Sedges - Holy cow !!! So, are you, for real, talking about the Rockmart to Cedartown stretch (cause that is more than the 2.5 miles so maybe I am even further behind the times than normally) ?

I believe the Rockmart to Fish Creek section has been finished for quite a while now. It is just the Fish Creek to Cedartown piece that they will finish this summer.

SILVER COMET TRAIL-WE HAVE A DATE!!
The last 2.5 miles of the Silver Comet trail is scheduled to be under construction in May! The Georgia DOT has also given PATH the date of August 25th as the target date for allowing the trail to be completed under the US-27 Bypass bridge near Cedartown. Barring unforeseen delays, the Silver Comet Trail will be seamless from Smyrna to the state line before Labor Day!"

Last time I was on the trail, it went about a mile past Rockmart and ended... the ground had been cleared for paving, but that was it.

I can remember riding the trail before they finished that highway bridge at around the 12 mile mark I guess it was... it's been years. One of these days I might get back on it again...

I wish they had one of these on the south side - Fayette County/Newnan area. The river trails in L.A. make for good safe riding. That would be a significant factor in deciding to move back home.

I am working up to riding 4 consecutive 50 mile days and plan on a round trip from Smyrna and return sometime this this fall. Cedartown falls almost exactly half way with lodging and restaurants available. There is also lodging and food available near the western end. Planning to travel light, but take my time.

Last time I did the Smyrna to Rockmart and back (several years ago), I was on a mountain bike. That took a long time and my ass hurt. I had never been on a road bike back then and had no idea how much easier they were to ride.

I definitely want to RT from Smyna to Anniston eventually.

The Chief Ladiga Trail was completed first all the way from the edge of Weaver AL west to the GA State Line. The just completed Sliver Comet Trail starts at the end of the CLT and winds its’ way to the current end at the western edge of crowded Atlanta. The nation’s first interstate paved trail is 92 miles long at this time. Plans are continuing to develop this multi-modal recreation path farther west to historic Conyers, GA, a popular bicyclist’s destination.
A popular starting point from the Atlanta end is the Floyd Road connection where there is a large parking lot and bicycle shop. The Trail is closed after sunset and it is patrolled.
A popular ride is to do the whole trail, stay overnight and return the next day.
There are lighted tunnels, a trestle or two, lots of shade, and a great little park at the State Line junction.
There is one caution for consideration about any isolated non-motor vehicle trail. If you have a catastrophic breakdown you may have to walk a long way to a cross road to get rescued. Be sure to research your trip as some sections are very rural.
