Im in need of replacing my aheadset. I have a 2001 Bianchi Talladega with threadless setup . Im confused between the 11/8 and the 1in. Also, depending on which size I need, can I just pick up any threadless headset in that size? Im looking at the king headsets used on mountain bike review website, is there a difference in headsets from mountain to road bike?

Nikos,
I am not sure what size that bike takes, but you can probably figure it out by measuring the pulling the cap and measuring the diameter of the fork steerer tube. You may have to pull the cap, but as long as you don't loosen the stem clamp bolts this won't affect your adjustment. I can tell you that not just any old headset will work, even of the right diameter. The replacement has to have the same "stack" height to work with the length to which the fork has been cut though if your current setup has some spacers this is less critical. When I am uncertain I usually leave things to the pros at my LBS. They know what will work, and they have the right tools to do the job in minutes.
FWIW,

Is the fork chromoly? If so, im pretty sure its 1 inch. King headsets are def worth the money, and there is no King road headset and a King mountain headset. Their all relativley the same weight, like the Cane Creeks.

Thanks for the replies, the fork is carbon - with 2-3 spacers. Im planning on taking it in to the lbs, but want to get a head start on finding a good deal on a headset.

You do realize, I hope, that you need a headset press and a fork crown race hammer to install a headset. You also need a headset remover and at least a big-@$$ screwdriver to remove the old one.

Yeah, I dont plan on installing myself. I just want to find a good deal on a headset. If I can get a King headset for 70-80 which I have been seeing them go for. I save the 130 retail, but will gladly pay the mechs the fee for installing the one I got or a cheaper cost. I really enjoy my lbs - but when I can save a substantial amount, I need to go that route. I would have to pay the labor fee either way.
