Hello-

Just went to the deli to get my morning coffee and paper and walking back home saw an ad for a "Trek 520 Touring Bike-older model, white, excellent condition, barend shifters, just tuned up w/new tires. Asking $300"

I called the guy and he said he bought it from the original owner a few years ago. It had a couple normal scratches in the paint but no dents, dings or deep paint scratches... just normal wear and tear. He said that it rides beautifully and that he has put "bull-horn style" handlebars on it(drops or straights, maybe he means moustache?).

I asked him if he could provide the serial number and he said no problem and that he'd call me back as soon as he gets home tonight. I think this will be the bike HERE (http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/90Trek/90Trek520.jpg) .

So what does anyone think? What else should I be asking and looking for when I see it??

Isn't 300 a little steep for a 1990 bike? Or is True Temper better than what Trek builds the newer 520's with?
I checked vintage-trek.com and the 1990 brochure said that the 1990 520 was built with True Temper.

Any opinions??

Thanks!! :) :)

$300 is reasonable for a Trek 520 touring bike. They
tend to go for alot.
Old Trek steel bikes are really nice and the 520/720 are
some of the most sought after models.
If its in good condition I'd say go for it.

My 520 is a few years older than that 87, and I was offered $500.00 for it a couple weeks ago. I wouldn't part with it for the price of a new one I love it so much. Check the frame you should be able to tell how the lugs have held up, check around the frame openings for signs of rust, eyeball it to see if the frame is straight and I'd say considering the price of a tune-up and some new tires, you couldn't go wrong as long as the bike fits you I'd snatch it up, and quite honestly at that price, I would snatch it up and have two of them in a heartbeat if it were local to me!

I paid $120 for a 520, ~85 frame. Currently built up with xt hubs, Sun Cr19 rims, and 8-speed bar ends
