Introductions - Joining the ride from socal

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi Everyone,
Joining the forum and already getting some excellent advise and information from everyone.
We (plus the wife and 9 year old) live in the Conejo Valley, 30 mi northwest of L.A. , 20 minutes from the sand at Malibu. At a native Socal son, it's required to surf, play volleyball, hike and go for bike rides. I do all of those. Thankfully, our area has some terrific road rides.
I've been riding a 10 speed Peugeot since it was brand new. I purchased it in high school. Since I paid about $250 for it, it has cost me about $8 per year! It's been a great bike but I have to admit that I want a bit more climbing power for all of the hills around here. When I lived on the Westside that didn't matter so much; now it does! I ride weekends with a friend who just flies up the grades while I grind and sweat.
So, as a birthday present to myself, I'm planning on buying a new bike. I'm leaning heavily towards the Giant OCR2 which I test rode last weekend. It was a great ride, smooth and clean. May also look for a used, cheap mtb to play with on the trails as a 2nd machine.
Really looking forward to some new adventures on familiar roads (or perhaps those are re-cycled ones..sorry bad pun).

Crusing the Conejo looks like a fun one. They had routes all over the valley. Everywhere I looked, there were bikes! I may join them for next year's edition.
We do have some great rides out here. Rolling hills, open highway, hard to believe we are anywhere near L.A.

Grades, what grades are you speaking of? Those little rollers out your way? :p
If you ever get an mtb there are some great rides around you and since you like climbing so much you should check out the switch backs off Moorpark Rd, nice little climb.

Well, I don't know how much I like the hills but as long as I can get up them, I'm happy! I did borrow my brother's mtb a couple of weeks ago and rode Cheseborough. Unfortunately, he swapped out his dirt tires for road ones and I took a nice fall right off the bike while sliding down the hill. Good bruise on the hand that is still healing! We rode out there on the day of the fires, as the smoke came over us. I notice you ride (and I assume) live in Simi? Did you make out okay?

We got buy without a scratch :D The fires did come within 5 feet of our plce though. My wife and little girl left on Saturday while I stayed around until monday. we are actually on the rim of Devil's Cyn. near Rocky Peak. The entire Cyn went up. An amazing site during and after.
If you ever get the mtb again let me know and I can show some of the burned areas from places not to many get to.

Wow! Glad to hear you are okay. The day I rode the trails, (sunday) I was stopped by a fireman just coming out of the park. He said if the fire jumps at Rocky Peak, it could turn and head right down towards us and wouldn't stop until it hit the ocean. He told us not to stay too long out there because it would come down in a hurry. We were under the smoke the whole time.
Although it did jump the 118, it continued down into the Valley.
