Here are some photos from today's ride. This is my routine, weekly, Thurs afternoon 25 mile loop ride up to nearby Griffith Observatory, just north of L.A. which I ride from home.
I usually hop on the L.A. River bike path which runs just a short distance along Griffith Park and Interstate 5. Upon entering the park I climb the canyon maintenance roads which are closed to vehicular traffic. It's a short climb to the top. These roads eventually lead up to the observatory and I loop back down the other side of the park. :)

Beautiful looking ride. Closed roads all to yourself... priceless!

I've been on the LA River bike path (we spend some time each year in Newport Beach) but not up the closed roads you describe. I will look for them. Your pictures remind us all that not all great rides are on twisty mountain roads, shadowed by trees. Thanks for posting.

Is that another fixed gear bike, or a single speed? Looks like 2 brakes. How many fixies do you have?
Thanks for the cool pics.

Hey thanks guys! I love this ride and has been my favorite out-the-door loop for several years. We've also done night rides up to the observatory.
Funny thing is, I've never seen a rattlesnake or a mountain lion, but plenty of deer and coyotes.

John, that bike is a recent single speed conversion. It's an old Litespeed Classic frame which I've owned new since 1993. It's good to coast from time to time so I decided to turn this one into a dedicated single speed...:D

Wonderful pictures, I was on the freeway 5 & always thinking to ride that path, can you tell me how to get on the path on your first picture, & is the second picture the entrance point? Thanks.

Looks like a nice ride. It's been ages since I've been to Griffith Park.

That bike path runs between Fletcher Ave and Victory Blvd and there are several access points in between.
That second picture is actually not the entrance point, but one gate near the top of the climb, just short of reaching the observatory. You either come out or enter that road depending on whether you're doing a clockwise or counter clockwise loop. I basically wanted to get a shot of the "bicycles permitted" sign. That is road Mt. Hollywood Drive which is gated on both ends where most climbing takes place. :)
