Foo - Algebra Hlep Please

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hlep me with this Albebra.
This is not factorable, correct?
30x squared + 11x - 30 = 0
It is not factorable, right?

(-b +- sqrt( b^2 - 4ac))/2a will also tell you of its factors.

The QUADRATIC FORMULA didn't work for me.

The factors, if any, would be of the form (Ax+B) and (Cx+D), where
AC=30
BD=-30
AD+BC=11.
There aren't many pairs of numbers that, when multiplied together, give you 30. These pairs are 1 & 30, 2 & 15, 3 & 10, 5 & 6. One of those pairs will be your choice for A & C, and one pair (possibly the same pair) will be your B & D (actually, B or D will be the negative of one of the numbers in one of the pairs).
You just have to start testing different combinations of these pairs. You don't even need to worry about the negative sign at first. Just look for pairs such that the product of one number in one pair and one number in the other pair is 11 away from the product of the other number in each pair. For example, take the pairs 5 & 6 and 5 & 6. 5*5=25, 6*6=36. Their difference is 11.
Go on to figure out where the negative sign goes.

The QUADRATIC FORMULA didn't work for me.
How so?
-11 +- sqrt(121+3600)/60 right? whats not working in that equation?
it gives you (-11+- 61)/60 which yields 5/6 and 6/5
x=5/6 => 6x-5=0
x=6/5 => 5x-6=0

Why are you doing his homework? Cryptic hints and guidance is what he needs ;) That way he thinks it through and really learns :D

I have everything done except for this problem, I got stuck on it. I was studying for finals (tomorrow) and I couldn't get past this.

Teasing you Max ;)
You'll kick butt on the exam....relax and do the easy problems first and then go back and rework the problems you got stuck on. That way, you'll get more done if you run into time issues. Also, the easier problems will often give you hints on the harder ones. ;) Strategy AND knowlege.

I am offended by your comment.
Any polynomial that can be expressed in "Ax^2 + Bx + C" (assuming A, B, and C are rational numbers) can be factored via the quadratic formula. It may be ugly, bristling with square roots, but it can be done.

With an equation like that, the best thing I can come up with is just guess and check. Start guessing numbers that you think look right and then check to see if you get the original equation out. I know, it takes long and you sometimes do not get the right answer, but that's the only way I know how to do it.

So, your math teacher doesn't know percentages well enough to be sure?

I gotta tell you folks, math scares the poop out of me. When I took statistics in grad school I though I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Thank goodness I teach English and speech...
Math to me is the "evil empire."
