BAMN's been around for a year or two it seems. Here's a news article on it:

And a video of the place!

What is an automat you ask?

I was intrigued by the automat after seeing it in the movie Dark City afew years ago (which is an excellent movie). The modern day vending machine is essentially an evolved automat.

Interesting. I want one.
I have always wondered why the automat didn't come back in style, especially in these days where people will be happy to just swipe a card in a reader, grab lunch from a drawer, and go their merry way.
The biggest issue I see (mainly because its easy to pay with credit cards) is ensuring that food is on the shelf for its recommended life, then promptly pitched.
I just think there is a market for automats, expecially in heavily trafficed areas of a city. Staff needed would be minimal, a janitor for the dining area and restrooms, a couple chefs for the kitchen, and 1-2 people to maintain the infrastructure. Because staff and people are separated, the chance of robberies is low, and with a camera or two, vandals would be promptly caught.

Good movie! Very dark indeed, but Jennifer Connely is nicely visible.
And I remember in the dim reaches of my childhood having meals in automats. Talking to some of the (even) older generation is bound to turn up at least one automat comment in urban areas...Horn&Hardart seems to be a commonly mentioned chain. They made a halfhearted nonautomated comeback in the '90s.

I recall hitting automats a few times late nite in amsterdam 10 or so years ago. They were great!
