'Flintstones' car case thrown out of court
A man who was facing charges for driving a pedal car won a victory in a Toronto courtroom on Thursday.
Trevor Baldwin was pulled over on a Toronto street last October for operating an unsafe vehicle on Queen Street West.
The Buick he was driving looked more like a car from The Flintstones animated television show, in which the driver and passengers use their feet to propel the vehicle.
Artist Michel de Broin built the so-called shared propulsion vehicle to make a point about gas consumption.
The hollowed-out car has no engine or transmission and uses candles instead of headlights. It does, however, have hand brakes.
The car, which has a top speed of 15 kilometres an hour, requires all four occupants to pedal and work together — a sharp contrast to the solitary, effortless experience of a typical car.
As the Crown prosecutor tried to make his case Thursday, the court erupted in laughter, and the charges were thrown out.
Baldwin's legal representative, Terry Fox, said the arresting officer never should have pulled the car over.
"Where's the evidence it was illegal? There was no objective standard here. Just his opinion is what it was, and that's not good enough. It's speculation he based it on," Fox said outside court.
Baldwin said he was happy with the decision. And what did he want to do after leaving court?
"I'm thinking its a really nice day, so we might go for a drive," he said.
That's exactly what Baldwin did. He grabbed three friends, pulled the car out of storage and took it for a spin.

That's good. I'm going to print this article and carry it with me to show the cops. I too have a "Flintstones" type car:

I saw the Youtube video about that Buick, and I think he could save more weight by removing the trunk lid and covering the trunk with Viscreen and packing tape.
Funny thing, I once had a 1979 Buick Regal, exact same body, but it had the 4.9 liter "Grand National" engine. I already had a velomobile, so I hadn't thought of a conversion.
How can it be dangerous? One would think that the crash protection built into the Buick would make it safer that a normal bicycle.

Hotbike: any YouTube videos of you riding that? I would love to see it in action.
I am surprised the cop did not also charge them for not riding single file!
Maybe that is next.
Too many cops. Not enough crime.

I have video of other people riding some of my other bikes, but not the type 6 velomobile. I have the video on 8mm tape, and I have to convert it to DVD before I can upload it to YouTube.
There is a camera shop that charges forty dollars per tape to convert. That's on hold for a while because of the price.

"Spectators giggle as prosecutor points out dangers of operating fake Buick
Apr 04, 2008 04:30 AM
ROBYN DOOLITTLE
STAFF REPORTER
The prosecutor's case began to unravel when he turned his attack to the tea light-candle headlights.
Up until that point, Daniel Lerner had argued that the car in question was unsafe because of its dangerous braking system. Granted, classifying the hollowed-out Buick a car is a bit of a stretch.
It's actually a piece of art made to look like a car by Montreal artist Michel de Broin. More than anything, it's a four-seater bicycle, propelled entirely by pedalling. At top speed, the Buick can hit 15 km/h.
It has no floor. No engine. No transmission. No signal lights. And as mentioned, tea lights sit in place of light bulbs at the front..."

Here is a picture of Mellisa and Patricia riding the Type 5, which has the same front end as the velomobile:

I think the Buick should have it's OEM lights re-installed. If you'll notice , the type 5 has it's headlight on in these photos. And my vehicles have working directional indicators.

I realize you are trying to develop something here and it's in early stages, but that has to be, BAR NONE, the ugliest bike I've ever seen. It's an interesting concept though. ;) I suspect though that if you had a better budget available, it's look a lot slicker.
On the other hand, you're learning a lot as well, so keep at it.

Yes, that picture was taken in 1991. Besides acid-wash jeans, the girls talked me out of making them wear helmets, because they had already done their hair , with hairspray, in preparation for the photograph.
Mellisa, steering the bike, was the one who designed the Type 9 fiberglass ladies bicycle:

Mellisa had been touring the country (37 states) with her Uncle in his Kenworth diesel truck, which inspired the aerodynamic style of the bike's fairing.
Mellisa and Patricia worked together to design the Type 7 fairing, which I still have (I sold the Type 9 because someone offered me a thousand dollars more than it cost to build). The Type 7:
