I tried fitting my Front mech today... its the first real bit of work ive done to the bike and i havent fitted a mech before so its all new.... I couldnt fit it so i took it to the bike shop.... He took at look at the mech, Shimano Deore this one (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/viewproduct.asp?category=Gear+Mechs+Front&ModelID=825) ... he said he may not be able to fit it cos i have the wrong one... he said that this mech was not compatible with the bottom bracket I had.... the bottom bracket is the same one that came with my bike.... its a
Shimano LP-28, square taper, 68 x 113mm, sealed cartridge
Does anyone see why this wont fit to my mech? Or is he just bull****ting to get a bit more money out of me....

The deraileur pictured in this link is a clamp on which requires no BB connection of any type.
I'm confused. Are you sure thata the one you ordered or perhaps they shipped the wrong one.
This scenario is one reason I tend to buy stuff from my LBS if I am unsure about it. If you get the wrong thing you do not have to hassle with shipping to get it corrected. It may cost a bit more but if it removes the confusion it is worth the expense.
Check the shipping slip against the part they sent. Maybe it was a screw up.

What I do not get is why the BB makes any difference at all since this mech is not BB mounted. It is sounding like BS to me now that you mention that.
If you are mechanically inclined to try installing it it is not very difficult to set up a front mech. The mech should also have an installation detail with it.

Is the BB issue something to do with the width of the spindle? How is your chainline. The middle ring should line up with the middle of the cog cluster.
If this is true, and you have a round seat-tube of suitable diameter, then you just fit the thing.
What could possibly go wrong?
