From what I see, there are a few things that would make it cheap

-single pivot
-fork (low low end marzocchi, if i remember correctly its made by sr suntour? can't confirm it)

although it may have some respectable parts, you pay for what you get

Doesn't see too out of line. It's a "price point" bike. Unlike higher end Big Hits, the Grom is only a single pivot (not a 4-link FSR) and offers 5 inches of rear travel; compare this to the higher end Big Hits with 9 inches of travel.

It also has generic brand components including the back shock. Marz MZ Comp isn't one of Marzocchi's high-end fronts either.

In addition, I find most Specialized's bikes -- with the exception of S-Works -- are competitively priced since they are such a huge company that they can afford to offer bikes at many price levels.

plus it's only a 24" wheel I think it was designed with smaller, or pehaps younger riders in mind. unless you happen to like a super small frame. The top tube is only 50 cm. If you're about 5'4" or 5"6" that might work.

Yeh i knew about the fork.... It just seems a very respectable price for what your getting.... i didnt look at the geometry... so your probably right it was designed for a smaller rider

that fork definitely isn't a "higher end" fork and is one that is not designed for heavy riding. i was at the lbs the other day and apparently someone at the store broke a marzocchi mx comp that was on a kona roast. (i am not too sure but the mz comp might be the newer version?) marzocchi pretty much said "no warranty" when they heard what happened since the fork isn't designed for abusive riding. straight from their site, the mz comp is intended for "marathon/xc" riding. while a lot of the parts on their are respectable and abuse worthy, i would personally go with something else. at that pricepoint, i would opt for a hardtail depending on the type of riding you want to do. if everything is 24" wheel specific too, you might have issues upgrading later on. and i also bet that the fork is "not supposed" to have an 8" rotor on it which will probably void the warranty. i know my fox vanilla can only have up to a 180mm rotor and i know it is significantly stronger than the mz comp. all the torque and force could pull the fork one way and cause flex and/or the disc mount tabs to rip off eventually.

mz comp and the mx comp are totally different. mx comp is definetly a lot better then the mz comp. The mz comp uses Coil/MCU so basically its comparable to a judy tt.

I was planning on purchasing this bike in the neer future. I noticed on thier site that it only comes in the short size. I am fairly new to higher end bikes, rather than my usual Wal-mart 90 dollar bikes. :) I am 5,11", about 130 pounds, and i plan to do some offroading and jumping but nothing too extreme. There are numerous atv trails that i plan to trek through. Would this bike be a good choice for just a basher for fun, and for traveling around town on dirt roads, or are there any other bikes that you would suggest? I AM on a budget here of about 800 for a full suspension bike. Thanks for the help, folks. -Mykey
