The early 80's thread has me doing some research.....
lets see if we can get some sort of a timeline going.

1882 Peugeot Bicycles first produced
1926 Society of Automobiles and Bicycles seperates into two seperate companies. Automobiles Peugoet and Cycles Peugoet. Peugeot did not 'sell off' the bicycle division at this point.
1947 Automobiles Peugeot establishes Sedis
1956 Crisis in the bicycle industry. Turnover at Cycles Peugeot drops by 50%
1956 In order to maintain the crisis Cycles Peugeot turns to the production of car components and becomes an equiptment manufacturer.
1959 Lions are removed from the hoods of cars because they are dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists
1965 Automobiles Peugeot becomes a holding operating under Peugeot S.A. This new holding company controls all Peugeot interests including Cycles Peugeot
1974 Factory of Romilly-sur-Seine Acquired. This factory produces all bicycles from 1987 on.
1974 ProCyle of Canada acquires rights to distribute French made Peugeots
1978 ProCycle signs agreement to manufacture and distribute Peugeots in Canada....French Peugoets still sold in U.S.
1983 ProCycle exports Canadian made Peugeots to the U.S. French made Peugeots still sold in the U.S.
1987 merger of AOP (Acier et Outillages Peugeot) and Cycles Peugeot to form ECIA (Equiptment et Composants pour I'Industrie Automobile)
2001 ProCyle discontinues the Peugeot brand.

There are few big holes in the timeline.

1. When were Fench made Peugeots first sold in the U.S.
I know they go back as far as the late 60's. Anyone?

2. Until the demise of the French made Peugeots in the late 80's, were they continuously sold in the U.S? I believe I worked at the only dealer that sold them continuously from the 60's through their demise in 2001.

3. What year were the French made Peugeots last sold in the U.S.? I know it was in the late 80's.

Currently North American rights to Peugeot are owned by Procycle of Canada www.procycle.com and european rights are owned by Cycleurope www.cycleurope.com Oddly enough cycleurope owns Bianchi........

As far as I can tell, until at least 1987, Peugeot S.A. still owned Cycles Peugeot.

Perhaps 1987 or 1988 was when french made Peugeots were no longer sold in the U.S.

The classic rendezvouz site is one of the first to come up when you do a search for "peugeot bikes france" Unfortunately their site has more holes in the timeline than what I've come up with. For instance, if you read their site its doesnt tell you that Peugoet 'sold off' the bike division in 1926. It leads you to believe they 'spun off' the bike division but still owned it.

Who imported the bikes before Procycle?
When were they first imported?
When did Peugeot stop selling French made bikes in the U.S.?
Who owned Peugoet before Cycleurope?

Heck if I know, but if you find out more, let us know. For fairly obvious reasons, I'm curious.

As I find new information I'll update my initial post.

The time frame for updating the initial post has expired.

The following link can be used for approximating the date of a
Peugeot. Of note, the Peugeot bikes at cycleurope.com are represented by a crescent. Perhaps they cycleurope owns rights to non-French Peugeots as they are not listed under bikes sold in France and the crescent represents secondary products...

Peugeot is still owned by the Peugeot family...holy $$$$$$$

The first trade mark symbols for the "PEUGEOT FRERES" products were designed by Justin Blazer, a jeweller and engraver based in Montbéliard. In a letter written in 1847, an appeal was made to the "good taste" of the artist to create the best possible layout of the letters and ensure the longevity of the trade marks. They included an arrow that can be seen under the paws of the Lion, created in 1850.

The company filed three designs to distinguish between the different qualities in which its tools were available:
- A lion, with or without an arrow, for top of the range products
- A crescent moon for second category products
- A hand for third quality.

In 1932, the Lion graphic was modified to suit the advertising and exhibition needs of the time.

VARIATIONS:
Initially the new Cycle and Automobile companies continued to use the lion standing on an arrow. But, in order to personalise their trademarks, the different companies adopted individual graphics:
- The CYCLE company used a Lion in combat
- The AUTOMOBILE company used the famous shield-shaped badge, featuring the LION'S head, followed by the LION seen on the Arms of FRANCHE-COMTÉ, which also appear on the arms of the COMTE de MONTBELIARD.
The most recent heraldic Lion was designed in 1998.
