I bought a Dell laptop last August. Windows crashed 3 times in a week and the touchpad never worked correctly. It went back and I drove to the Apple store and got the Mac I really wanted and haven't looked back since.

Switching from a PC to a Mac is something like switching from shorts to bibs. Once you try them you never go back.

:)

neko: It sounds like the internal keyboard cable might have worked itself loose. Until you can get it fixed, you could at least hook up an external USB keyboard.

Mash the Caps lock button. Does the light turn on or off?

If it doesn't, its a hardware issue, and either call Dell to have the cable reseated or if you are out of warranty, follow the directions here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins640m/en/SM/keyboard.htm#wp1111863

If the Caps lock key does light up and turn off when you hit it, it may be one of multiple problems. I'd consider booting a Knoppix CD to check if the keyboard works with that.
