I believe I have finally uncorked the Lafree Sport. A while back I had removed one of the magnets on the plastic disk on the left side of the rear hub. I noticed no improvement. There are three magnets on the disk, and a magnetic reed switch on the left seat-stay.
To remove the magnets, I put a 1/8ths inch drill bit in my cordless drill, and "perforated" around the magnets. By that I mean I drilled a hole every 3/16ths inch around the circumference of the magnet. Then I grasped the edge of the disk magnet with a pair of pliers and twisted back and forth a few times. The plastic broke away where the perforations were.
I topped the tires off to 95 psi and went to the Dairy Barn to buy milk, cookies and frankfurters. It was uphill on the way there, but on the way back, naturally, it was a slight downgrade. I had the deraileur in 7th (high gear), and the motor did not cut out. I don't have a speedometer, but it seemed like 24 MPH. (The motor cut out at 18 MPH before).
I also happened to catch all the red lights, so I didn't have a chance to let it wind out all the way.
Also please note that the bike requires at least one magnet to work. About two years ago I moved the reed switch away from the disk, and the motor did not work at all.
Today was a nice day here on Long Island, Suburb of New York City. The temperature was sixty degrees fahrenheit, sunny, and not as much wind as the past few weeks.
