A question/suggestion from the Touring Forum

Is it possible to create a thread in that subforum for our websites, etc?

If not, is it possible to sticky a thread?

But Tom, we don't like to go outside of the touring forum. We know the people there and trust their judgment. Why do you want to make us post in a forum that we don't want to post in? If people want to find the threads about the blogs they can just do a search.

I kinda like the idea of a 'touring specific' stickied thread, to be honest, and can't see that it'd hurt for sites mentioned in there to be cross-posted and also mentioned in the more general 'Blogs' section.

As an older novice rider I'm learning heaps from the 50+ crowd, and from reading topics in the Road Cycling and other sections, but my eventual goal is to head off for more extended rides of several days or more, travelling about the countryside. So the experiences of riders on extended trips are particularly interesting things for me to come across, and a thread dedicated to mentioning them would seem a welcome thing.



Whilst I'll express my support for the idea, though, I don't really think a facility like this is something which should be asked FOR or expected to be provided. Instead, it's something which a more experienced/longer serving participant in the section could simply take the initiative and start. All it takes is this:



Spend a bit of time digging up mentions of the blogs you recall people here making in the past.
Create a thread which includes a reasonable selection of the 'better' links, maybe a mention of who posted them, and a very brief summary of each.
After making the initial post, make one or two 'Reserved' posts to allow for future expansion.
At practical intervals, go back and edit in mentions of other sites people have mentioned in posts to the topic, and which merit inclusion amongst the list. That keeps the list current.
An occasional 'Added new blog links' post restores the thread to attention, either via a 'New posts' listing if the thread has already been stickied or by restoring it to the top of the section index if it hasn't.


Should a thread such as that prove popular and useful, it'd surely end up stickied eventually, from merit.

As it happens, both options I'm requesting can only be done by a moderator or member of the forum personnel, not general members.

Option 1 is adding a thread to the subforum at the top of the touring forum (or modifying the title and purpose of the current, unused, thread there).

Option 2 is making a website/blog/etc. thread a sticky.

While I'd love to be able to do those things myself, I cannot. :D

And personally, I would prefer that people add their own links to website, blogs, etc., and if they make changes to their sites (i.e. adding a tour they have just completed), they can make the announcement themselves. I don't know that any of us has the time to monitor such a thread to ensure that it is accurate and up-to-date, etc.

Either of those options, Machka, are easily enough achievable after a thread of this nature is already up and running, and if the thread proves to be meritorious and popular then there's a better argument for getting that done.



Having such a thread in the sub-section listed at top of page is simply a matter of 'moving' the thread, which is an easy enough exercise. Having such a thread stickied in the main section can be done at any time after the thread is in existence.


And if there truly is nobody active in the section who would maintain such a thread and keep it current as a useful resource then perhaps such a thread isn't an option here? The really good informative threads on internet forums exist because members devote a bit of attention to them, IMO.

The reason the current thread in the subforum within the Touring Forum is inactive is because most people have websites or blogs or whatever, and they aren't posting their "Travelogues" in that thread anymore. This is what prompted my suggestion that we create something in that subforum for websites, blogs, etc.

Yes, I've done a fair bit of reading in the 'Touring' section so far. Plenty enough to realise that there are actually SIX further inactive sub-sections within that particular sub-section. they contain now a dated but still interesting and perhaps helpful information, and my assessment would be that they do no harm by being left there.

I would, though, as I've already stated think that there is benefit to be had from a well maintained listing of other travelogues/blogs about touring to be included as a thread in that sub-section or as a Sticky in the main Touring section.
