Southern California - Crank Bros Candy SL Pedals - Any Thoughts?

Currently I own a pair of road shoes & pedals (TREK road biker) and I recently had a really bad spill because of them. I was coming to a stop, for a little rest/water, and my front wheel became caught in a groove created by a seam where asphalt and concrete came together. Well, I put my right foot down on the concrete and it started to slide out and away from me while my bike and I went in the other direction. As I began to do the splits my right leg bent and hyper-extended down and away from me, while at the same time the same leg hit the pavement super hard at the inner right knee area. Ouch, full splits, left foot still clipped-in and the right knee felt like something had popped. Thankfully we were on our way back, there wasn't much to go and with a little Advil I made it back to the car.

Any way, what I'm doing now is shopping for a pair of mountain shoes and pedals to go on my road bike. The pedals I'm thinking of getting are the Candy SL's by Crank Brothers. The shoes I'm looking at are the Shimano 122's.

If you have any thoughts, comments, reviews, ideas (good or bad) and/or opinions regarding the Candy SL's or the shoes I would really appreciate it if you would reply to this thread.

PS - It's been about a couple of weeks since I had my fall and even though the knee is healing there is still plenty of pain and discomfort. However, it feels better and better as each day passes (incase you were wondering).

I have the CB Candy pedals (and Eggbeaters and Quattros, all SL models). I love 'em. :D You really can't go wrong with them. Easy to clip in/out (fairly important since i have them on my fixed gear and you can't stop pedaling to engage the pedals). :)

I have the Candys w/ Sidi Dominator 5s. I had couple of close calls when I had to unclip quickly because of traffic and love the traction that the D5s provide. No complaints here.

Can't comment on the Candys, but I had a pair of Smarties that I just really never got to like. To each thier own..

I've had Eggbeaters on my moutain bike and my SS/FG roadie. No complaints at all. The only issue with road use is that the shoe needs a good solid sole, as there is no platform at all on the pedal. The float is perfect and they are cake to get in and out of.

I like the eggbeaters more than the candies, but both are ok.

I have the Candy's on my Mtn Bike and the Quattro's on my Road Bike. They have worked well for me!

Maybe I should also consider the plain old "Eggbeater" pedals too as possible candidates. So long as the sole of the shoe is rigid and stiff without any flex, then the bottom of the shoe should act as one large pedal. Most riders I've spoken to about "hot spots", have all stated that it has never happened to them with any of the pedals they've used.

Well, for the regular Eggbeaters, if you use them with MTB shoes, ideally the shoe tread will actually rest on the body of the pedal (provided the tread is thick enough or the cleat is recessed enough). It's not much of a platform but it's better than having your entire weight sitting on the "wings" (the retention mechanism).

and as a bonus, I can walk in them!

Even Beanz uses Mtb shoes...so they got to be good!

I go back and forth between my mtb and road bike and use the same pair of Sidi dom 5's. Tried the Candy's and didn't like them. The eggbeaters are the ticket for me. Don't feel like i miss a platform, but then again i don't know any better. Candys seemed harder to get out of for me. Would like to try the Quattros....

Don't like the candys, but the eggbeaters are great. Have them on all my bikes. You may want to try speedplay too.

They sound good enough to eat. :)
