Hey, I'm new here...I am building up a classic marinoni frame as a commuter, and I got an incredible deal on a barely used 8 spd Record grouppo..Right now I am trying to get some wheels built and was wondering...

Are shimano 8 spd hubs compatible with campy 8 spd cassettes? Or am I going to be stuck looking for the campy bits? Thanks!

The hubs are NOT compatible, but there is a reasonable solution. A company called Wheels Manufacturing makes spacing kits that let you use (for example) a Campy drivetrain with a Shimano hub and cassette by replacing the spacers between the cogs to get the correct spacing. Their website is: www.wheelsmfg.com

The compatability is between the cable pull by the lever, the mechanical advantage of the rear mech, and the inter-cog distance.
If you have a Record lever and mech, you need an inter-cog distance of 5mm. This is similar to Shimano 7spd, but not 8sp, which is 4.8mm.
A company called Marchisio (distributed by Torelli) make cogs for Shimano and Campy hub spline fittings, which are available individually, with spacers of various widths.

Its a similar solution to the above.

So taking all of that into consideration...I would probably be much better off just getting ahold of an 8spd Campy hub and build a wheel around it, rather than trying to get all this together with basically the 'wrong' hub?

//oh and thanks a lot!

I'm not sure if Campy makes 8 speed hubs anymore, and the 9/10 speed systems use a different spline pattern than the 8 does, so even a Campy compatible hub from another source will not fit without one of the above solutions. I am working through the same problem myself with a Spinergy wheel I want to put on the rear of my 8 speed Campy Mirage equipped Bianchi. So far a Shimano cassette and the Wheels Shift 8 kit seem to be the least expensive solution, but I still haven't amassed enough funds to purchase the needed pieces.

Yeah they don't..I'll be keepin my eyes on ebay and chatting with local shops, try to find a NOS piece. The grouppo I found came with 3 cassettes so I don't want to go and have to rebuy them in shimano pieces..

c'est la vie...
