Ok, so i figured i would rant here. This year at School is hands down the hardest and I have a hard time accepting failure. I realize that i should be studying all the time and for the most part i do study a good amount, but today I just took another test i think i failed. I mean really, is there any reason to make test nearly impossible?? I know they are trying to weed us out, but DAMN!!!! So just to be a bigger tool i decided to calculate my gpa and even if I fail 2 out of my 5 classes, my gpa will not fall to badly... so i guess that is my consolation at the moment. sigh... i cant wait for the real world (and wait before you all say that school is better... i can defend this) becuase you are not chosen to FAIL at things, you are put on projects becuase you can get them done, well. You also get paid to do it. Most jobs also do not have homework (i know that some people stay late and take work home) or exams (granded i know a few). AHAHAHHAH for as long as i can remember I have wanted to be older and in the next step of life (ie, in high school i wanted to be in college) I guess this is just me ranting more. And if it was not so cold here i think i would ride, but oh wait i have a 10 page paper due, homework and a test to study for..... AHAHHAHAHHAHH

ok... end of the rant

thanks

spaze ...

Hang in there. Although my brain cells are dropping like flies, I remember my college days. In particular on a chem final (for 300+ freshmen engineers) where the high grade was 35 pts out of a possible 100. Believe me though, the problems you are facing will now will pass and you will find new ones ... many more difficult ... around the corner.

Moral of the story ... keep your chin up and push on!

Dont worry dude, Im in my 3rd year of college and this year has been the easiest. Once you get farther into your major you can take classes you WANT to take and not the crap ones like english and basic math...it will get better

I hear you, man...I went to a school that was supposed to be known for their engineering, but all they did was pit you against everyone else to try to weed you out. There were many tests where the high grade was around 30%, and like you said, seems like something wrong when everyone is failing a test. Anyways, just know that it's a lot of work, but in the end you'll have a piece of paper that says you made it through all the BS, so now you're worth more to employers.

Believe me, though, you're in the hardest part. In a job, you just have to do good. Like you said, in a job you are there to get a project done, not to see if you can fail. Just stick with it, dude, it'll be over soon.

With the exception of the roommate thing, that's my life right now too. The only thing that makes it bearable is $0.15 buffalo wings during Monday Night Football at a local bar. Go eat!

You think you got it bad?

Heck, when I was in school, I had to walk up hill both ways in waist deep snow on top of broken glass, and that was the summer! Plus, all I had for shoes were old rags wrapped around my feet!

It was so dark on the way, I had to carry an old oil lamp. Halfway to school, it would get light enough, and I would hang the lamp on a tree limb. By the time I got back there after school, it was dark again.

We didn't even have pencils and paper. We had to use hammers and chisels to take notes in the ice coating the inside walls of the classroom, and our instructor kept whipping us and smacking us with a ball and chain, and that was the A students!

Tongue now being removed from cheek.

Do not accept failure. Ask for help. Find a tutor. Seek out the prof and ask for help. Later on, you will be glad you did.

I remember lots of Chemistry tests where I was happy to get a 30. The real humor lies in the fact that people pay me for my services as a Chemist. I remember exams where it was known beforehand that the math (if you could call it that) would be so f'ed up that you KNEW no one would get it right so you could actuall just understand and explain the concept verbally and pass. These exams were great because you could go to the bar the night before.

I miss school...beer and girls so close together <sigh>

Ok, take a long deep breath, I am about to offer unsolicited advice . First of all I am sooooo sorry you are going through this, I think many of us have been through similar situations. I had a roommate that was bi-polar and refused to take her meds, it was so bad I slept in the study lounge to avoid her and her rampages.

In college I had to learn you aren't going to be good at everything, but sometimes a little charm goes a long way. The moment I felt I was struggling in any of my classes I spoke to my professor. I actually made it a point to introduce myself to each professor I had at the start of the semester, that way when I needed help or a break I was in a better position to get what I needed. Professors will only help those who help themselves. You may need to start networking in your department, this is a good lesson for "the real world". You may not have homework, but there will be situations where you will need a deadline extended or help fixing a mistake. Learn to network and ask for help now, and you will be much better off in the future.

As for your roommate, don't make the mistake I did. Go talk to who ever is in charge of your dorm/frat house. You need to get this resolved quickly and I would bet the problem has been simmering for a while and may have contributed to your stress over school. If that doesn't work you can try looking pitiful until one of your friends gets sick of you and decides to fix the situation for you.

I hope things get better for you soon, let me know when you get back in town and I'll buy you a cup of hot chocolate.

Totally agreeing with Cyclochica.

I had my major in Rhetoric, but my minor was in Molecular Biology- I really STRUGGLED sometimes in those classes, and it just burned me up sometimes to see the Biology majors breezing through. They had many more classes where the subject matter was similar enough to where they had more overall Biology than me, then I had to compete with that? Uuugh! But I did play nice with every professor and all the TA's, and when the time came, if I was ever between a grade, I got the higher grade every time but one time (an entemology class, and that p*ssed me off! I was only one freakin' point from the A!!!!!). All my professors always knew my situation, and they knew I worked my butt off, so by the time the grades came (before they turned them in to the school for recording, that is), if I was close, I'd go see the professor and argue a few points and score a few points.

As far as your roommie, go see your RA and see if you can get on the wait list for a new room- and a room without a roommate would be even better too. I feel for you, seriously. After my college days, I NEVER want to deal with another roommate again!

just remember, if you are intent on getting the grades after doing poorly and can do nothing whatsoever after the exam (ie *nothing*)(ie *nada*) then you can still stop and observe the other students who passed or failed the exam and see and say "Hmm, what the......"
Hang in there.

Don't get mad, get a tutor.

Our student services center had free tutors you could book a week in advance. The first thing I always did was go to the Student Services at the beginning of the semester and book a tutor for all my hard classes until the end of the semester. It was always dead at the beginning of the semester, and a lot of the stuff we did in the initial meetings were pretty slow, but once we got knee deep into the semester and stuff got hard, it was nice to know I had a tutor to go to if I ran into problems. On top of that, a lot of the old tests for the professors were at the student center with the tutors, so they could whip out all the old tests and we could study off those and see what the types of questions the professor liked to ask and see what would be most likely to show up on the test. It might seem like people are smart, but maybe they're just smart enough to go to someone who can help them to get the goods grades. That way, if you're smart, you actually get help to let the professor see you're smart too... ;)

If you have a Notes n Quotes in the area, I'd pay for the notes the graduate students take too, and use that as an additional study source. Sometimes, the grad students notes weren't that great, but sometimes, the notes were word for word, and it was a blessing in disguise to get your hands on them. The rare grad student would take the notes and interpret what the professor was saying so that it was understandable. For something like that, I'd kill for. If you don't have the Notes n Quotes, just see if there's a store like that in your area you can go to. Just don't let the professor see it- they hated Notes n Quotes and always thought that people who skipped out purchased the notes, which was true in some cases, but I never missed a day of class, took great notes AND got the grad students notes too.

In college, these types of challenges separate the men from the boys (or women from the girls). Tough it out and finish. You'll be proud of what you accomplished.

Get help, get out and get on with YOUR academic life. Don't let other's crapola impact you so much. (See 165-48:17 lifeline below):
First year of Univ = ISU, GPA = .25 (don't ask, it just happened that way)
Roofing = 2 years (and you thought the Univ would take me back after my first, stellar year)
Warehouse work = 3 years
Military Service = 3 years
First REAL year at school = NIU, GPA = 3.7
2nd year = 3.72
moved to Korea, taught English at University level.
Returned to US, lived in CO.
3rd year = CU, GPA = 3.46
4th year = 3.49 (DAMMIT!)

And here I am , posting on a website. See? Everything will be fine...if you want it to be and make it so.

Perhaps you spend to much time here, and not enough time on the books. Failure isn't really that your incapable, it can be a sign that you're meant to do something else. There are other paths to success than college, and sometimes you have to ask:

What's more important, the degree, or the education?

Beyond that, looking for sympathy for your failures is not a way to cure the base problem that you're not preforming to a set standard. Identify why you're failing, and fix that problem.

This opinion and point of view will not be popular, but I'm reality based.

I do the same thing with out the degree.

Again, what's more important, the degree, or the education?

In high school many, many, many years ago I took trig and geometry. I scored on one test 6%! The teacher I thought felt sorry for me and gave me a passing grade at the end of the quarter.
In college, I wound up in math courses again. After my first test I absolutely was so upset having for sure felt I'd failed big time. When the professor posted the scores, the highest score on the test was a 93% and the next highest was a 78% on down to a low in the 20s. It turned out I got the 93%! It was at that time that I learned if you learn the basics even if you don't always get it right, then somewhere down the road it will pay off.
Did I graduate? Not even close.
I wasn't ready for college at that age. I've had what a lot of people would call a fairly successful career. But you'll probably spend at least a third of your life at your career, go for what's really important, so damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead!
Failure is a big part of learning. Some people have called me "smart", I figure I may have gotten that way from failing to much.
Just remember happiness comes from what's inside.

"Few among men are those who cross to the farther shore. The rest, the bulk of men, only run up and down the hither bank."

sometimes you can feel like you have done everything right, only to find that you have failed. however the choices you make (to continue on) will correct that failure in the future and turn it into sucess. Never give up, always keep trying... even if you fail at everything in life you have at least suceeded in trying.

p.s. last semester in college I got a D+ in physics, and I need a C for my major... it sure might make you feel bad, but you can always come back and do it right (even if it takes two tries)

Indeed. And you are paying dearly for this privilege. Part of their job is to weed out. In my opinion, another part is to help students learn. Some don't do their jobs very well.

My educational experience was similar to 165-48:17's. I eventually graduated *** laude. Just to give you some idea, counting high school, I think I took pre-calculus 3 times. When it clicked, it was pretty cool.

Hang in there, you'll eventually find out you're capable of more than you ever thought.
