I live in Dylan's hometown, Duluth, MN (although he grew up a few miles up the road in Hibbing.) He's never turned his back on his roots, has several friends and some family still here in Minnesota. A few years ago he played Duluth for the first time - that was fun. But I will never forget seeing Dylan at the Hollywood Bowl in 1965 or early 1966 just before Highway 61 Revisted was released. I heard him sing Desolation Row and Just LIke Tom Thumb's Blues live that night. I've never forgotten it, probably because I wasn't stoned - not that day anyway. I'm a real old timer! Started with Dylan in his folk period.

My only problem with Dylan is that he's been around so long and produced so much music that I've lost track. I was into his music up until Nashville Skyline. I frankly didn't like it and stopped listening to his new stuff. There were just too many other bands/artists to listen to. But of the music I am familiar with, many of his tunes rank up at the very top. I even loved his voice - especially back when he was singing things like Girl from the North Country and It's All Over Now Baby Blue.

I thought Rage Against the Machine was on to something. But now I'm not so sure. BTW, they did an outstanding "Maggie's Farm" (live) on their last CD, before they broke up.

What I love about teaching is that I tap into the kids new music. Most of it is crap, but occasionally a few gems pop up.

There is some great stuff being put out by young artists these days if you know where to dig for it. Unfortunately the youngsters who get the publicity and make the big bucks are, in my opinion, not the ones who deserve it.

Dylan has been great and terrible throughout his long career. I think his last few albums are very enjoyable, if somewhat dark. I really enjoy his Theme Radio Hour on Sunday mornings on XM. He digs out some great tracks from all eras and genras to fit whatever the theme of the week happens to be.

Taking a bit of a veer offtrack, I'm going to see Son Volt tomorrow night in Atlanta. Jay Farrar was co-leader, along with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, of Uncle Tupelo, the alt-country supergroup.

I don't see many concerts these days and I'm really looking forward to this one. Just getting out of town for a date with my wife will be a real treat.
