Thought I'd start a thread to get any news as to when the bridge will be open to pedestrians this week.
I optimisticaly went down there around 2:30 today and it was still closed, but the word of mouth was that they would open up the West side for bikes earlier than the normal 3:30. I also spoke to someone who said they might start a shuttle for cyclists. I hung around for about 20 minutes and gave up.

Is it open for bikes yet? I'm not getting much information from the local news. If anybody knows whats going on please post as I'm sure this effects alot of people on this forum.

Well hopefully todays activity doesn't spark the debate about closing off pedestrian traffic again.

BotleRocket, thanks for the thread.

I was planning to ride up tam Wednesday AM, leaving from my place at 7:30. I hope the bridge is open (especially on the way back since I have a flight to catch later in the day).

not sure if this will help ya out or not ....
Bike/Pedestrian Path under south end of Bridge Closed Intermittently Through mid-2008
The bicycle and pedestrian path under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco side) that connects the Bay Ridge Coastal Trail with the east and west sidewalks of the Bridge and with a portion of Battery East Road will be closed INTERMITTENTLY, Monday-Friday between the hours of 7 am and 3:30 pm through 2007. The closure is to accommodate seismic retrofit work on the Golden Gate Bridge. The pathway will be OPEN to bicyclists AFTER 3:30 pm for access to the west sidewalk. When closed, detour signs will be posted to direct bicyclists and pedestrians to use a route through the parking areas and tunnel under the Toll Plaza and Highway 101 to connect to Battery East Road or Lincoln Boulevard. Bicyclists should walk their bikes through the tunnel under the Bridge when the path is closed.

I guess it's up in the air when they will open the paths until the torch run is over. This may help or not, the GGB webcam (http://www.sfgate.com/liveviews/) from SFGate. I don't see any peds or bikes yet.

There's no info on the GGB site as of yet.

Strange the webcam goes off today. (back on again) Anyway, according to the news, they are letting peds and cyclists on the bridge with inspections of backpacks etc.

The East sidewalk was open this morning for bikes/pedestrians.
They had security at each end checking backpacks and making sure there were actual babies in strollers. Probably not a good time to wear your "Free Tibet" T-shirts.

That's funny. I was stopped on the Marin side -- the officer wanted to make sure I wasn't wearing a backpack. I thought to myself, "I guess I should have worn my 'Go China!' jersey."

In addition to the officers stationed on either side, there were five cops on bikes riding on the bridge as I crossed. It was really windy and they were swerving around quite a bit, but seemed to be enjoying themselves.
