Im looking at getting one of these pretty soon. I drive a massive black truck but i just dont need it anymore, I guess im out growing my young teenage ways. I really like the montero sport, seems to have everything i could need or want. Does anyone drive one? Any problems? what do you like about it?

Mitsubishi in general produces good vehicles. I really liked the old Monteros and I almost bought my son a used Montero sport. Through a little research I found a couple of things that caused me to change my mind. A cycling buddy of mine works for a company that sells extended warranties for cars and trucks. She told me Montero sports have a really bad reputation for transmission trouble as they get a few miles on them. But the kicker was insurance (my son is 16). Montero sports are the most expensive midsized SUV to insure in Georgia. On both the State Farm and Farm Bureau rating scales Montero sports were rated several points higher than Explorers, Rodeos, Blazers, etc.

Yeah i have heard some have problems with the tranny and i have heard some are perfect, i guess its just the way you take care of it. I also heard my GMC has tranny problems but it seems perfect so far. I also like the fact that the Montero has a large cargo area, to put my bike in.

I've got one, well, the wife does. It's a nice vehicle. No problems except the sunroof screen rattles on rough roads. Tranny's fine, seats (leather) are nice, engine is good - if a little underpowered and it looks good. Plenty of interior room with the seats down and the backseat is reasonably sized. Installed a hitch and hauled a 3500# camper from TX to Denver a year and a half ago and even though there wasn't a single extra horsepower, it did OK.

They are overpriced for what they are. That's my only real zinger. Mileage isn't all that great, but that's not a big surprise. The older ones, up to 99 or 00, had the worst rollover ratings of just about any SUV but in 00 or 01 they did something to fix that and now they have an "acceptable" rating by the Insurance rating board.

Overall, I'm content with the one I purchased 2 years ago (an 02) and had for a year with no interest, no payments; of course now it's horribly upside down, but since I have no intention of selling anytime soon, not a big deal. For reference, I drive a Dodge Ram 2500 CTD. You're never too old for a big pickup truck!

djbowen - it sounds like you're the only one with a stick up there - "these are bike forums not car and driver forums" - what the hell is that? Foo is anything not relating to bikes....

Thanks skiahh for 1) the good informative post and 2) defending what the Foo post area is for...Another question i have is, while i have 2. 1) how is the sitting, im a big guy (6'4 250) and while i drive a truck its a single cab so there isnt alot of room to begin with. 2) how bad is the gas mileage? again im driving a huge truck with a big v8 so i think anything smaller than a v8 is an improvement...thanks again

hey, i gave some really good links there. In my opinion and experience with mitsu products, i would stay far away from them used. A new one with a warranty and your good, they hold decent value. The older ones rolled easy.

Hmmm.... at 6'4" it might be a tad tight for you. The headroom's close for me at 6', so it'll depend on where your height is. Plenty of Leg room in there. Mileage is 15-17, depending on the type of driving. Got 21-22 drafting on a longer road trip, but knew the driver of the lead car so it wasn't a problem.

Are you looking for something new? In the same price range, you can stay with a pickup and get a Dodge Ram Quad Cab - plenty of room in there; that's what I have.

Only way you can check for sure is go down to the dealer and sit in one. Now that sounds like fun! NOT!

Yeah i went to the dealer tonight and looked in them, they do look a tad bit small but then again i thought my truck was small too. I also looked at the pathfinder and xterra...all looked good...im not really looking BRAND NEW but new used 02 or 03
