Southern California - Retro Jersey Interest Thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This is the thread for gauging interest for production of J9, the retro jersey with blue sleeves. The cost should be the same as the others through ChampionSys, roughy $50 with shipping, etc. This may not be the final design, I'm thinking to appeal to a wider audience and to remove issues of trademark and the notion that this is the "official" jersey, that we should remove "BIKEFORUMS" and put "SOCAL" there instead... bikeforums could go where "dotnet" is now

Yep, not showing up.
Yeah, I had just linked to the pictures mary had provided, but those just got pulled. I'm asked the designer for the pictures again, when I get them I'll host them on my own server this time...

Does "retro" in this context refer to the design only, or will this be a wool jersey?

I am in if the costs are reasonable. Might be good to state the cost? I am assuming the same as the other 50-55?
We would use ChampionSys like the others, so yeah it should be in the roughly $50 range

I'd be interested in this one, medium size.
If this does not get made I have absolutely no interest in a red/black eastern european themed jersey.

I'm interested in the version of this design with more white, actually. Except, like umd said, switch SoCal and Bikeforums so that people won't know I spend all my free time on here. :p
If the one in white doesn't get enough buyers, then I'll buy this one in a...um, small? XS? Can someone point me to the sizing chart please?

me too. but be careful. this thread may end-up in the for sale forum if you remove the bikeforums affiliation. because..you know...that seems to be the rule.

Yeah, that whole other thing with yours is messed up. Mods must not be paying attention to this thread...

Yeah, spooky.
;) I changed the text on the OP to include that I would keep bikeforums on it. So you don't have to move me...

it's ok. i think we have enough interest to go ahead and order, but i wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to get in on it if they wanted.
just kind of disappointing that some random mod would feel the need to take things into their own hands without knowing or understanding what's going on.

Note: we did turn the R and N's back.

I don't want to commit just yet for hopes that the white/blue vintage style jersey gets made. But if that doesn't happen, I'll definitely take one of these in a medium. :D
Edit: If I could get this style jersey AND the white/blue vintage style for around $40 a piece, I'd take one of each.

Yeah, white sleeves add a "contemporary" touch to a "retro" design. Quite cool.
Either way, count me in for one.
I appreciate the efforts of going thru that you guys r making.
If there is enough interest for both blue and white sleeves then I suppose we can do both.

Before you start changing the design by committee, you might want to consult the original designer.
That would be me.
I need to request that any changes to the original design go through me. I think that's only fair.

That's fine. That's why I didn't make any changes, only proposed it. ;) Would you be ok with such a change?

Maybe...
I'm going to talk a little like an art director here, so bear with me.
I kind of like BIKEFORUMS as one big word, mostly because it's not a word you normally see. That's good because it adds a bit of surprise to the design, and it makes people look twice. In some ways, BIKEFORUMS almost looks like it's a foreign word - like the odd product names you might see on real retro jerseys. I think that adds to the retro appeal.
I think with "SoCal" you lose a bit of that mystery because it's more common, and I think that might detract from the retro look as well.
That's my humble opinion. I'd like to see what other people think about it.
Also, before this goes too far, there may be a fundamental problem with the design. One other thing that I pointed out in the other thread was that the wraparound nature of the logo may be a problem because of the way jerseys are made. Can the manufacturer guarantee that the wraparound logo will line up on all sizes? Perhaps we need to find that out before any redesigns happen.

My thinking on the "Bikeforums" being the dominant wording is that it limits the market/interest for the jersey. When the idea of the contest was first proposed, many people said that they didn't want it to say bikeforums. I like the design, but I would rather it not be so prominent myself. Also, I may be able to get people outside of bikeforums interested in it, which will help meet minimums and lower the cost per item, but not if bikeforums is so prominent on it.
As far as the wraparound, my wife brought that up and we've already said that after looking into it further it is not an issue with ChampionSys, due to the way the prepare their artwork for each size. They have examples with wraparounds on their site.

On a tangent, I see so many of these freakin' kids in orange county in their lifted pickup trucks that have never seen a spot of dirt rocking SoCal stickers on the rear window. The last thing I want to see is a jersey proclaiming to the world that I identify with SoCal. Sheesh, we're already here...what's the need to plaster it on everywhere?
Many apologies for the long winded rant that probably offended some... just my $0.02

Good idea.
You'll need a matching shorts design.
What color will you choose for the non-printable area?
lycra colors available in black, red, blue, navy, green, gray & orange.
I would suggest changing the blue to match one of the default blues, but then it wouldn't look 'retro' anymore.

I didn't want to get too mixed up in this, but my opinion is similar. The word "SoCal" shows up everywhere, and is usually used by marketing types to promote a stereotypical beach culture lifestyle. I'm sure you can find a jersey with the word "SoCal" already on the market. I never ever wear jerseys with any sort of logo, but I might wear this one because it's strictly for the people of Bikeforums. That is what makes it unique, and I really of like that aspect of it.
Anyways, I put out a design that I liked and I stand by it. If other people like it, great, but I honestly don't care if it gets made or not, so I'm still not sure I want to change the design. I'm not 100% against changing it, either, so I'll keep my mind open to the idea... discuss amongst yourselves.
Oh, and matching shorts... that's not retro at all... and it's hard to find stock blues that aren't oversaturated and cartoony.
That's all I'm going to say. I do get the distinct feeling this thread is going to go nowhere -- that's just how it is on the internets.

Eh, I've lost interest already. Too much hastle. You guys can make the jersey if you want, but I'm out.
"socal" was the one part I didn't like on the jersey. I never understood why anybody who lived in SoCal would want to advertise they live in SoCal when they're actually in SoCal. It would be different if you were moving out of state and wanted a SoCal jersey to distinguish you. Or if you did a lot of traveling. But I live here in SoCal and ride here in SoCal and I really find it unnecessary to advertise that fact.
I thought this was supposed to be a bikeforums.net jersey. ??

No, it's a bikeforums.net jersey for the so cal group.
Traditionally the jersey has the region on it.
If we were to make a bikeforums.net jersey we wouldn't do it in this forum.

Technically we're in the "Southern California" forum but I was referring to the above suggestion. A bad idea IMHO. Whenever I see SoCal it's usually plastered on the back of a black Escalade next to the Raider Nation sticker or on the back end of some chick walking around in public in pajamas. Personally I don't want SOCAL plastered on my jersey in big letters so I can be associated with these other fools.

its not gonna happen one way or another.......no matter how cool a design is people will just go back and forth making suggestions all the while no one will actually take up the reigns of supervising all the PITA logistics of actually getting it made.....period. not gonna happen.

I, for one, like the jersey as it is. I don't like the idea of a big SoCal, that's the main reason I'm not into the black jersey on the other thread.

Erm...umd? Did you really give up on this design? :(
If so, would everyone who wants the one with white sleeves go over and state their interest on my thread? We just need 3-4 more people to make an order...

Yes. I can see now its going to be hassle with the whole white sleeves/blue sleeve thing, tinrobot not wanting to make shorts, etc. Between working full time, and a photography side job, and racing and being the co-president of a cycling club, I have too much other stuff going on to deal with it. There seems to be more interest in the white version which I am not interested in, so you guys can run with it.
Can we also count how many people would want a wool one of these? I'd rather have a truly retro jersey instead of one that just looks like it... also, I don't have a wool jersey yet!
If we get enough interest (say 10 people) then I will shop out the companies and get prices (figure about $80). I will also take care of ordering and all that fun stuff.

We found a company that does custom wool jerseys but the minimum order is 100 pieces...

i doubt youll be able to find anyone with less than a 100 unit minimum. the woolies come either from china or italy(and a few from new zealand..), so even the "USA" companies have a hard time getting them. Chad from portland cyclewear could probably tell you that!!!!!

i like the jersey. is there going to be some kind of sign up or has it completely gone away/awry?
I still like this jersey, the way it is, with no changes. It's unique, with enough "SoCal" flavor that you know where its based out of. I like Extort's idea of an actual Wool version, keep meaning to get a wool jersey of my own. But yes, getting custom wool is going to be expensive with very large minimums.
