I received a free copy of "Hooked on the outdoors" in the mail today. Not bad, just another outdor rag, but there was an article about Better World Club that caught my eye.

They offer roadside assistance to cyclists. They advertise:

"The nation's first bicycle “pick-up” service is now available through Better World Club.

Better World Club will supply this service nationwide. It works just the same as our reliable emergency roadside assistance program for auto-mobiles. We'll take you and your bike to the nearest repair facility, or home, within 30 miles from pick up."

Might be worth looking into.

I've often thought that would be a great idea, though. You have a membership, and call if you get a mechanical you can't fix, etc. I'd call it the BBB club. It's great someone put it into action, maybe there will be more of them one day.

Where I used to ride I was unable to get a cell phone signal, and 30 miles would get me about 20 miles away from town.

I trust very few people to work on my bike and the site suggests that you will only be given a ride if the "mechanic" they send is unable to fix it. I don't want someone I don't know to even touch my bike, let alone attempt fixing something on it. No thanks, I'll save my 40.00 and hitch a ride back with a friendly motorist.

If I can't fix it to get to the shop somewhere, why am I even riding a bike?

It might be a good idea for someone on a cross-country tour where they are a long way from home and only have a few tools.

They are a good alternative to AAA for your car though. I read somewhere that AAA lobbies for "motorist rights" at the expense of safety and the environment.

Better World is sort of an environmentally friendly version of AAA with most of the same services at competitive prices. From that standpoint, it makes sense for them to offer the bicycle services. Though I personally am not interested in them (the bike services), I was thinking about letting my AAA membership lapse and switching to Better World.
