Actually, Los Angeles had a wonderful history of public transportation with it's electric trolleys. These ran until 1962 when the rather poor bus system replaced it. It is coming back in different forms. For different versions see:

It will take many more years of reclaiming what was lost to out-of-control development and shifting from trolley use to car use back again. But with the help of bikes here, I am hopeful.
