Southern California - Threads about threads being deleted are being deleted

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Someone should put a helmet on this thread to keep it safe.
Do you think this thread would be better if it were made of steel, aluminum, titanium or carbon?
Or to shift themes: Campy or Shimano?
I like to stop for a few beers mid-ride.

Oh wait: these are topics we should probably avoid, yes?

Ultimately, it's their sandbox. Watcha gonna do if they don't let you play with the yellow tonka truck? You gotta make do with the plastic buckets and shovels, or go home.

Besides, I think I hear all of your moms calling you home for dinner anyways...

Right, but where did that money go to? It went to bike forums.

It cheeses a good number of people off that certain mods are somewhat pissy about certain other forums, when said people have paid good money for no ads, larger avatars, and little red stars. Clearly, bike forums wins out on the benefit side of that equation; it should be clear to bike forums management (read: moderators) that people with little red stars have a vested interest in this site regardless of whatever other forums they frequent, and said other forums should have no bearing on what goes on here.

I'm complaining because I don't like the way the discussion of the "other" jersey design was pulled and swept under the rug. I think not allowing discussion of controversial events is short-sighted.

I have enough things in my life in which to worry about.

Plus, the folks who post here are essentially the site's content providers. Versus, say, an online cycling magazine format, with paid writers and editorial staff. Here, the "writers" work for free, as do almost all of the "editorial staff" (moderators).

It makes for an interesting dynamic, that's for sure.

seriously though. i want it to be better. i dunno what all this malarkey about the sub forum wanting things certain ways is all about, but it seems in the last few weeks things have become really bad on here. what was once friendly snarkiness has in many cases turned into out and out hostility, sometimes with little to no moderation. and then when the mods do step in it seems the threads are either locked or simply disappear, usually with no rhyme or reason. now i dont know if any of the people who cross lines are warned(as this is abviously not brought up publicly...) or if the "toys" are simply taken away, but the seeming randomness( as well as the obvious PETTINESS) is getting out of control....

just my two cents. i like it here, but ive had a taste of freedom and its a bit more appealing....

How many people are complaining because they want this subforum to be better, and how many are complaining just because they want to?

I made mention of this earlier: I am an I.T. guy by trade. A database administrator and a PHP coder. I work for a publically traded company (sort of) and we must abide by Sorbanes-Oxley guidelines. I understand the need for rules and regulations, and moderators and moderation. I am not opposed to heavy-handed moderation when a forum needs it.

I am complaining because as of late the moderation has gone over the top. I mean, c'mon, you have paid users getting threads pulled because a moderator assumed (read: means he didn't check his facts) the jersey contained in the thread was for another forum when, in fact, it was a generic SoCal jersey. You have moderators breaking the rules of the site and throwing out personal insults with no apparent ramifications, yet those same moderators clamp down on threads like dammit when us "normal users" do the same thing. You've got moderators getting pissy with red-starred users who happen to also frequent another forum.

Normally, I'm not one to complain. I run a forum of my own. I know what it's like. I've shut down threads, I've deleted threads, and I've had users "yell" at me for doing so. The fact I am complaining -- and have a red star, no less -- should be something of an indication that all is not well.

*shrug*

EDIT: Which, of course, means I want this subforum to be better.

I just don't like having to bounce between 2 forums now to get my local information and general topics covered. Some day on a group ride somewhere, somebody is going to tell me what the heck happened here that caused so many people to run away. I must have been working or riding when it happened because all traces were deleted and I was blind sided.

well i've never had a single problem with the management until today. i don't contribute any more or less than i did in the past or since that other sandbox was built. BUT it appears that since i SEEM to have put forth my jersey design over there before i did here(which i didn't, and i think UMD can confirm this), i'm now some sort of traitor and promoting another brand of sand.
i asked someone to start a thread over there to try and generate interest amongst members who frequent both sandboxes, and once we had a sufficient number of takers, i posted a thread over here to let everyone know that there was an independent sand castle project in the works. and now i'm an infidel or something.

strengthening of the sandbox will not be achieved through heavy-handed pettiness and toy snatching. that does not work. it never has.

+1000

I found out about the split well after the fact. I thought and still think that setting up the alternate SoCal forum is a mostly bad idea because it tends to break up the community. Still I can see why it may have happened. This forum has not been all that reliable lately, and the general level of trolling and culture clashes has been edging up over time as new members with different sensibilities have joined in the mix.

Online communities evolve over time, which is in itself neither good nor bad, but in this case, the abrupt departure of some very active members who provided quite a bit of informal leadership and energy to the forum has been very disruptive. The recent pissiness over competing jerseys is just a symptom of the tension, not the cause of it.

I do think that the current management of BF has handled the situation exceptionally poorly. Internet Brands is not going to go under because some members of one of their many forums drop out. There is no legitimate reason for deleting threads or censoring discussions of what has happened.

Hi,
I work with Internet Brands and I wanted to post here as a resource to you.

I am very familiar with the technical problems the site has been experiencing, and I really apologize for all the frustration it’s caused. I have posted in the Forum Suggestions & User Assistance (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=6476982&highlight=#post6476982) with updates

Also, I see that the discussion of site administration has come up here. I wanted to let you know that if you have real complaints about the administration of BikeForums.net, the right avenue for contacting Internet Brands about those issues is to email me at IBcommunity1@internetbrands.com.

I’ll be happy to answer any questions!
Thank you,
JuCo

Can we all agree that despite a few issues...that really in the whole scheme of our lives, are VERY minor...we like having the So Cal sub-forum and would like it to continue?

I'm asking because it's not inconceivable that the BF owners/management/whatever might decide that we are all a bunch of PITA's and just shut the whole thing down.

When I joined BF a few years ago, I mainly posted in the Road forum and that was pretty cool. But when Joe agreed to the SoCal forum, I spent about 90% of my time in here. It would be a shame to lose it.
