During our morning commute into downtown Chicago my friend and I came across a sad (if not horrifying) sight at Augusta Blvd and Milwaukee Ave. Lying by the side of the road was a bike that looked like a giant had grabbed the head and seat tubes and torn the bike in four. The top & down tubes had been ripped from the frame at both ends and looked like torn Coke cans. The fork blades had been ripped out of the crown.
We stood there aghast, this crash seemed so violent and bike was so totally destroyed that all we could think about is how the rider is doing. Does anyone from Chi town have any info? Or know a rider with a bike that fit the following description. Silver Felt frame with Campy Chorus parts, Mavic Ksyrium wheels.
Accident happened between Monday evening and Tuesday.

If this did happened late at nite? Did you check with the police? This could be some sort of hit run and there trying to cover it up(as in hiding the body)Thats something to consider.
It just seems strange if it was a reported Accident the police would have taken the bike.

I plan to check with the police later today. The police in Chicago don't always take the bikes of accident victims, I seem other bikes clearly involved in accidents on the road. This one just sticks with me...

Are you sure the bike was being ridden? Maybe it fell off somebody's rack and got run over, or was a stolen bike that was then abandoned in the street.

This one just sticks with me...Thats another injustice to cyclist. They always have time to impound the cars for evidence that are involved in serious accidents.
Hope everything turns out ok.

Looks like classic front end accident damage. The front wheel is a taco, the back is perfect. It looks like it was hit once, very hard! The damage just isn't consistent with the bike falling to the ground or lying on the ground and being run over. Might have a lead...

I just wanted to let everyone who has checked in on this thread (all 134 of you) that we located the cyclist to whom the bike belongs. I spoke to his boss this morning when I dropped off his bike (still can't believe no one nicked it). I don't want to give out too much information but just want to give a little update. He has had several operations for severe internal injuries, no major head trauma (Amazing, considering he was not wearing a helmet) or broken bones. He is being kept under sedation and that barring unforseen circumstances they expect him to recover.

Just a reminder: Everybody please wear a helmet and don't ride at night without lights and reflectors.

I just wanted to let you guys know that after reading some of these threads and hearing the horror stories of the guy at the bike shop last night, I have now started wearing a helmet. I've been riding for over a month now, and this morning was teh first time I wore my helmet. I don't plan on stopping!

<SNIP> first time I wore my helmet. I don't plan on stopping!

Smart move!

I have seen head injury patients when I worked at the local hospital. I wouldn't wish that life on anyone.
