yes, it's possible.
spoke breakage is often not a matter of too much torque being applied to the wheel, but a matter of the spokes being uneven in tension so that some spokes can completely lose tension when you rock the bike back and forth while pedaling hard.
I've heard that once you have broken about 3 spokes consecutively on a wheel, the rest of your spokes are likely to be damaged and the best choice may be to replace all spokes.
