Notes to self: 1. Beth can spin out a 50x11 combo. 2. Draft behind Beth.

Point number 2 sounds good in theory. However she is quite petite. If I tried to draft her, it would be like a semi tractor trailer tailgating a Yaris... not too effective! :)

I am planning to be at Lancaster, so everyone has fair notice for buying their sunglasses: my legs will still be blindingly pasty white.

This one will be my first!

It's a great ride! Be sure to search out the group at the start of the ride so you can meet everyone.

And this is different from every other year how?

Exactly! Someone once pointed at my legs and asked, "Do you have feeling down there?" And that person is a friend...

We should have a saturday ride again as well for those coming into town the day before. (20 miler easy paced stretch your legs kinda ride.)

I have no idea what you are talking about. Is such a thing even possible? :)

Notes to self: 1. Beth can spin out a 50x11 combo. 2. Draft behind Beth.

See y'all in Lancaster.

And notes in reply:

1. Note that I said I spin the 50X12 out on the descents. Won't do you much good on this particular ride, as there aren't many descents (or climbs either)

2. What he said. As a relatively "petite" I'm not much use at the front of a line, but I'm always happy to take my pull :) (and I'm going to pick up HG's line on any little descents and let him lead me up the next coupla rollers)

You don't get the "beaten up upper body" thing? Lucky.

I think I'll aim for the Saturday ride this year. Living so close, it hasn't made sense to come down and stay in Lancaster, but I may do it anyway.

All this is if the rain ever stops. Bahhhhh I'm sick of the rain!

Well I signed up...not like I was going to miss it but I was talking to a guy from the Blair Bicycle Club up this way and he said that the Lancaster Ride would have a limited registration this year and no walk ups. This is due to them running out of food the last couple of years I guess.

So anyway can't wait...and Grasschopper is going to ride strong this year...I have been doing a lot more riding recently. :D

Finally got round to registering. Accommodation booked. Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from last year and some new ones. We should be able to make the Saturday ride too.

Compared to what I have around here, I thought the descents on last year's ride were killer. It's not often I get to use an aero tuck. Heck, even the climbs seem epic to me. I remember standing on the pedals while my heart was exploding just so I could speed up the hill and get ice cream before it was all gone. Ice cream sure was good, though.

2. What he said. As a relatively "petite" I'm not much use at the front of a line, but I'm always happy to take my pull :) (and I'm going to pick up HG's line on any little descents and let him lead me up the next coupla rollers)

Modesty. Sheesh. You're not fooling anyone.

You don't get the "beaten up upper body" thing? Lucky.

Actually, I don't think my thought quite came out the way I was intending. I ride a full aluminum frame with not a single ounce of carbon fiber. I feel *ever* bump on the road. It's rough. :)

Can't wait!

I think I'm in for the Saturday ride...if it's not too early, that is....we're leaving Hagerstown about 8am, so that'll put us there around 10am.

But I'll bet that aluminum frame is a nice, snappy ride! Mine will be my shorter ride bike; the steel/carbon combo is great on a longer haul.

I just registered. This will be my test ride for the liveStrong Challenge the following week. I signed up for the 100 mile ride in Philly and hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew. Anyway at the end of the Lancaster ride I will know.

You have so much time between now and then the 100 should be no issue assuming you ride regularly and build into it. How long after the CBM is Philly? I do the Austin ride every year but it isn't for another couple of months after CBM.

Last year's was early evening and people met for dinner afterwards. I'm hoping someone with a little local knowledge is willing to lead the ride again. Last time it was a great way to stretch the legs and sort out any bike niggles.

Hmmm... I checked sheldon brown's site and park tool, as well as my zinn manual, and can't find this term anywhere :D

I may still have the route on my garmin if no one local shows up. However, I can't guarantee we'll make all the correct turns and the 20mi ride could end up 25 or 30 :) I also have a difficult time keeping pace and tend to speed up uncontrollably from time to time :innocent:

Bike Niggles? I like it. Next time I show up at the bike shop I'll ask them to take care of the "bike niggles". Wonder what their response will be?

And Grahny, I tend to chase people who speed up uncontrollably from time to time. Just because. Can't help myself. And...I also tend to speed up all on my own uncontrollably from time to time. Just to see what happens :innocent:

I'm local, but not SO local that I know all the back roads in the area of the hotels. Bet we could come up with something, though. I'll be riding the MS ride in that part of the county in July.

Feels like summer out there! August will be here before we know it.

I'm at a really slim (10-20%) chance of attending this year after 3 years in a row. I've got a 6 month old at home (who will be be 9 mo. old in August, too young to ride unfortunately). I'm still in the process of negotiating 2 hour weekend rides, let alone training for the 100km. We'll see... August is a long way off and I've done day-of registration each year anyway. If I attend, everyone will have to look at cute baby pictures at every rest stop.

Dave, congrats on the baby! I was in a similar place as you last year. My son was born in may (just turned 1 y.o.!) and was barely 3 months old at the time. My wife had a difficult pregnancy, so I wasn't able to get out on my bike until after he was born. Looking back at my bike journal, my 'training' looked something like this:

June 24 - 7 miles
July 7, 14, 21 - 12.5 miles (got 8 in on the 8th too, w00t!)

Right around this time is when I rememberd to check on the covered bridges metric to see when it was... holy crap, it's in like 4 weeks! Time to kick it up a notch!

August 4 - 34 miles
August 11 - 59 miles
August 19 - covered bridges metric!

So, that's < 150 miles of training, and I was able to finish.

I wish I could say that this year it's easier to get out and ride. I've got about 65 miles under my belt at this point, and don't really see too many opportunites for more between now and august 17.

Been trying to figure that out, the only obstacle to me going. Can't take Amtrak. Could take Septa then ride 30 miles to Lancaster...but after a 60 mile ride that ride back may not be too appealing :)

I'd love to make a weekend of it, go out on Friday night. Do you want to split a van rental? Maybe we can rope a few others in too.

The closest lodge is sold out (Hampton Inn). Sorry, G, I have means of getting there already. I'm sure you can round up people for a van..

Depending on the size of the group, I might be able to host. I'm 70 minutes drive from Lancaster. I'm already hosting baj. Baj and I would probably be interested in the van as well.

Bicycle Club of Philadelphia already has a couple of folks who ride from King of Prussia to Lancaster, complete the metric, and ride back. You sure you don't want to do 120 miles? :)

If you do, take the SEPTA R6 to Norristown Transportation Center, ride the Schuylkill River Trail to Longford Road in Oaks, follow that into Phoenixville across the bridge, along Bridge Street, and onto Rt. 23. Follow 23 till you get within a couple of miles of the ride start.

Hopefully I'll be recovered from my cracked rib by the time of the ride.

Has there been any confirmation that there won't be any walk-up registration this year? I've got a couple of potential out-of-town trials coming up, and can't really guarantee that I'd be able to make it if i registered now...

Assuming that there is no walk-up registration, when would you say is the latest I could do so to ensure that I still get a spot?

There is nothing in the mailing or on the website about limited registration this year . . .

This looks like a great ride.
Might be worth the 3 hour ride from my area.
What are the roads like?
Paved well enough for standard road tires?
For a $15 registraion fee I can't expect there to be well stocked rest areas...am I right?
Just trying to judge what I should bring and how to equip my bike.
Thanks.

It a great ride...yes bring a roadie with normal roadie tires and you will be fine. Lunch and the finish are well stocked and the rest areas in between have water...there are some locals that setup a rest stop or two with their own food as well.

First step - hotel room reserved as a backup. (Sorry if this was asked but) Any suggestions to cheaper options around there - $130 a night at the Holiday Inn was a bit steeper than I was expecting.

May take you up on your offer TH - my plans are very much in flux but I'm playing it by ear for now.

If you do, we need to arrange some form of transportation for the bikes. My car can squeeze in two, but that's it.

Roads well paved, plenty of skinnie tyre road bikes, like maybe 2000 of them. I rode on 25mm with no problems. My one complaint about this event is the food/snacks. The rest stops are just water (at least on the 25 mile loop), bring your own banana. I also prefer something better then a piece of pressed ham between two pieces of whole wheat for lunch. Their sponsor Turkey Hill provides 4oz. cup of ice cream. Last year they gave out ice cream wrist bands to prevent pigs like me from getting back in ice cream line for 3 cups. Anyway I noticed a Mickie D's about 2 blocks up road from start/finish, so my lunch this year will be there.

I thought the food was fine... probably 'cause I'm not used to stopping for a 1/2 hr lunch break :)

If I'm ever unsure what the food situation is going to be for a ride, I always stuff 1/2 a bagel in a jersey pocket and much on it throughout the ride (I think I did that last year)... throw in some gels and Heed single packs to mix w/ water and you're good to go.

Ditto that. I'm used to doing long rides without support (except for the well-planned convenience store stop for water refills).

Example: Sunday's ride (a climber) - 75 miles, 98 degrees - went through 2-1/2 packs of shot blox, 2 full bottles of Cytomax (powder mix), 3-4 bottles of water, and a Clif MoJo bar. Started the day with a large bowl of oatmeal with a tbsp of Crazy Richard's mixed in, a little sugar, and a pinch of salt...a big mug of coffee...and a full 28 oz bottle of water before I left to ride.

It's easy to overeat on these rides; I'd rather keep it light and eat when I'm done. The company at the lunch stop is fantastic; however, I'd rather stop for just 5-10 minutes and gather again at the finish. I stiffen up way too fast and would rather just keep moving.

Well it looks like I will not be able to make it this year. I have a wedding to attend in Canada that weekend. I am going to miss seeing all of you again. I am especially going to miss Neil B. (The Historian) and Beth (Road To Nowhere). You guys....every last one of you that I met, made the trip for me last year. I hope to run into some of you on some of the other rides in the area. This is my one chance to meet my girlfriend's family from the UK and I sure don't want to miss it.

Hey Neil...best of luck with those ribs. I hope you can make it. I will be sending some good vibes your way.

Have a blast everyone and God bless you all.

Well I normally wait till closer to the actual event, as quite frankly I'm not up for a ride at 90 degrees and 90% humidity. Last year was great weather. That said I was thinking of responding to Neil, as I'm not so fast myself. Last ride of 30 miles I was just over 12 mph average. I kind of figured I'd also be dropping back and riding with Neil. But hey, we were suppose to try the 30 mile route together at last years Bucks County Covered Bridge. So you have a partner for LCCB. Although currently I only feel like 25 miles.

How fast you ride is not the important thing here. As I'm sure you know, it's just an opportunity to shake hands with the anonymous faces on BF. In reality, it's all pretty fluid on the road. Pick your ride, set a pace that you're comfortable with, and enjoy the adventure. :D The more the merrier!
