Fun ride and the weather was great.

Only having a 34x21 for climbs wasn't optimal, especially with the way people coast down hills so they can suffer more when going up the next one. Argh!

That's me! It was my first on my very first road bike! I had a blast even if I was a bonified "Fred" according to the Road Forum. I averaged 17 mph and had a great time.

I wish I had known you were someone I should have known!

Home again and my quads are still feeling that blistering pace.

It was great for Jens to grace us with his presence....too bad he blew up before the finish...I was sure he was going to win.

I will download my photos this evening and post a few. Thanks to the Steves for letting me draft off them most of the day and thanks to StupidlyBrave and HigherGround for actually stopping when I had a flat.

I love it riders go by..."You ok?" "We could use a pump that works better." "Ok bye." :wtf: Then HigherGround came to the rescue. I can't believe I forgot my Garmin and my pump and brought my old...size too large jersey. :o And of course the first ride I go out without a pump in years is my first flat in years.

I hope Jens finished...he only had like 2 miles to go.:roflmao2:

Rich - did you find your toothbrush?

Heh, I just realized that I passed y'all when you were fixing that tire then y'all passed me when I was putting the chain back on my bike.

Sadly, I never even asked if you guys were OK since I figured that many people on the side of the road must have the situation covered.

It was a great ride today with perfect weather. I completed my first metric century with an average of 16.5. Not bad for me. Next week is the LiveStrong Challenge and I hope to complete my first full century.

Hey guys -

Sorry I missed you at the start; I really would've enjoyed putting my fancy frame pump to good use once again fixing that flat! ;)

I will say that, despite my 5 am wakeup, it was great to be finished and changed into dry clothes before noon. The route and road crossings were better covered, and there were plenty of subs left at the finish. While our group blew by all the rest stops except lunch (and who's hungry for "lunch" at 9:30?), I'm assuming they were well covered, too.

The best part was sitting in the lawn chairs watching all the people come in. So many bikes, so many great jerseys . . . and I'm so glad we caught up with each other!

Not too many pictures on the road this year. . . by the time I slowed down enough to get my camera out, we were already in Lititz. But it was a perfectly beautiful day, a great ride. I'm feeling a little sun-cooked now, but otherwise really good. Just sleepy.

So here's what I came home with:

Nice ride, aqua4her! I saw you after you came in from the ride, but didn't get my butt outta my lawn chair or stop yapping with people long enough to come over and say "hi". And then you were gone. . .

Saturday morning rides out of Mechanicsburg HS? Interested, pm me :)

And to the rest of you I didn't get to talk to in that mass of cycling humanity, hope you all had a great ride!

Just wondering if you were going down a hill when your chain came off ?

I just got home from this myself. Although I've ridden 50-60 miles on a rail trail, this was my first supported distance event and it convinced me that if I'm going to ride on the streets instead of the MUPs I've got to get off the hybrid and get a road bike.

I recognize your jersey aqua4her. We were parked next to you. I was one of the guys in the blue van discussing the idiots that double parked behind you.

Does anyone know what the deal was with the photographers near the end on the ride? I was thinking that maybe they would be offering the pictures for sale online somewhere, but I didn't see anything mentioned on the CBM Website.

It was the same couple as last year. The 70-200 and 300/2.8 give them away. The URL should be in the 2007 thread.

Just got back home......

Had a great time, even though I never really hooked up with any of you during the ride....

I averaged 15.7 mph , over a full mph better than last year! The hills didn't seem as big this year , but they still killed my average speed....I finished right around 12:30-ish.

It looked like they changed a couple of places on the route, right before the lunch stop and towards the end?? ..... somebody help me here....I know it was different...

I layed down over by the stream afterwards.....and later moved over to the embankment on the other side of the road to cheer the other finishers.....

I love vanilla bean ice-cream.... :)

rizz
08-17-08, 06:56 PM
The route was definitely different. Did we go over that hill that used to have the guy with ice cream at the top? That's one of the climbs I was looking forward to but the hills seemed easier this time around.

My data:

Total distance 62.71 mi
Total time 3:32:34.61
Avg pace 3:23/mi
Avg speed 17.7 mph
Max speed 35.7 mph
Total calories 3864 cal
Avg cadence 95 rpm
Total ascent 2710 ft
Total descent 2704 ft

Yeah, communication wasn't the best. . . and my group is all about being prompt. "It's 7:32, we're late, let's go!" One of our guys was running late and called, so we didn't actually pull out til 7:40. I figured you guys were either a) not there yet, or b) had left at 7:30, I had missed you, and I'd catch up with you somewhere out on the road.

Sorry I missed seeing Jens. . . but I did see that cool mtn biker dude spinning the entire 62 at 140+ rpm

 When I got back to my car, I was wondering why there was a water bottle stuck under my windshield wiper. I thought that seemed like a weird promotion. As far as I'm aware, everyone did the full metric. It's a really good route... I'm looking forward to getting out there again.

I'm somewhat pleased that you guys are a little sore :o - good to know I'm not alone! As tired as I was last night, I just couldn't get comfortable sleeping.

Today I teach a class at noon, and am leading a club ride this evening. Either I'll be loosened up, or the group will be treated (?) to a relatively easy B ride tonight. Think I'll pick as flat a route as I can find.

Chip, I thought of you and Cheri when we were out there yesterday. Particularly at the spot where the rain started pouring on us last year. Sure was nice to be out there in the sunshine this time!

Sounds like everyone had a great time. We'll probably be there next year, at which point there should be another 10-15 lbs less of me (which would make me 20-25 lbs lighter than I was at the last Lancaster ride).

I'll try to time our vacation so that we don't have 4 straight weekends of "vacation" to recover from before the ride next time.:innocent:

ROFLMAO no doubt. In retrospect I owe a lot to Beth who made the final decision for me to ride the Bottecchia rather than my Merckx. Had I been riding the Merckx that flat would have been on a tubular rather than a clincher and while I do carry a spare and would have had no issue changing it, I am pretty sure I wouldn't have felt safe riding at the speeds we were doing after lunch with a non glued tire on there.

So thanks Beth...good pick...and maybe it is time to buy another set of wheels for the Merckx. :D

I regret not meeting you all in person. I had no idea of what I had signed up for and no idea of how much fun it would be. The Road Forum guys think the 50+ jersey is very "Fred". I'll continue to wear it like a badge, one I've earned on the calendar.
