Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - What brand and size of tire?

My tires (35c Vittoria Randonneurs) are starting to wear out and I'm looking for new ones. These came on the bike and the only flat I've had was a pinch flat due to underinflation. I use them on road, on gravel bike paths and a little off road. I'm generally happy with them but just want to try something else. I was considering Maxxix Overdrive 38's or Vittoria Randonneur cross tires 35's, both have a little more tread, but I can't find too much info on them. I am open to other suggestions. What would you suggest as a good all around tire, and what size?

Try Continental Highway tires. Maybe Bontrsger Invert Hardcase tires.

Either 700 x 35 or 700 x 38.

If your not stuck on the 35/38's, I can't speak more highly about the Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase. They come in 32's. I have a set of Maxxis road tires right now and I have been very happy with them and they have a great rep in the MTB arena so they might be work a look.

If you want lighter try the Pasela TG. If you want tough, look at the Schwalbe lineup.

for a cheap option, look at the irc tandem, i've had great luck with them.

Thanks. I guess the other part of my question is how thin of a tire would you feel comfortable riding 32"s 35's? I think 28's would be asking for bent rims. What are your experiences?

I ride 23's on my road bike and 28's on my hybrid. Based on the size of your rims, that will determine your minimal wheels size, plus consideration of your road conditions. You were talking gravel and off road so you might not want to venture below 32.

I run 28mm tires on my commuter, but it never sees gravel or off-road use. At most, some chip-seal roads and potholes.

I have those same tires (32c flavor) on my bike. Just out of curiosity, how many miles did you get out of them? Actually, the rear one, it is the first to go.

For general road riding and randonneuring I like the Panaracer Pasela TG 32mm. Not so good for touring but very comfortable.

I went to REI this afternoon and wound up with a pair of Pasela Crosstown 32's. They were ok on the road for a test ride this evening. They have a little tread which I like. I'll try them on gravel paths over the next couple o weeks. I figured the REI 100% satisfaction guarentee has me covered if they turn out to be less than optimum for my style of riding.

I cut open the rear Randonneur which had begun to get a little squared off across the tread and the tread cuts were almost worn away. I was suprised to see how much rubber was left and the layering inside. They have a red strip just under the tread rubber which looks like it is the main protection layer. It looked to be almost 1/8" material total. It would be very difficult for something to get through (hence no puncture flats). I'll wear down to the red if I use them again.
