My god, sram deraileurs are king compared to shimano. I've been an avid(no pun intended) shimano fan for so many years but damn, what a differnece. The new rockhopper has and x-7 rear and x-5 shifters and they are sharper, quicker and run smoother than any shimano I've ever used.

Shift pod and cable quality have more to do with shifting quality but whatever.

nice, i suppose this is a property due to the different 1:1 cable actuation ratio?
it's time i took those for a test ride

Right. And I am coming from many years of using xt shifters and deraileurs almost exculsively. I've gone through many new cables and versions of the xt line and have never experienced the crispness and ease of shifting the sram shift pods and deraileurs have.

I would disagree. The design and cable pull have a lot to do with why sram deraileurs are nice a crisp. Totally different method to how they work.

Even outside sram if you look at the 105 deraileur, stick any pod with it and it shifts stiffly and crisply compared to my xt's. S

horter cage vs longer cage etc. All of this has implications on how a drive train setup will work.

So yes, I completely disagree.

Wait until that 2008 turns a year or two old and report back as to how well it works.

I can set up just about any "brand new" drivetrain at the Deore / X5 level or higher to work like a freakin' well oiled machine...as long as it's oiled well, hahaha.

The thing I love about my XT level crap is that it works that way for a loooong time with very little adjustment or maintenance. My X.9 derailleur crapped out as fast as my LX. Same with lower line SRAM crap. I like X.9, it just crapped out early on me. 2007+ X.9 shifters feel as good as anything. I'm still running my XT rear derailleur...I don't even know how old it is now. 12 months...18...maybe older. It's still nice and laterally rigid in the parallelogram linkage and the pivot bushings are nice and tight.

Good on you for loving your stuff though. The last thing I wanna do is fart on your happy day. I just think that it's easy to give a decent report on brand new equipment.

I had a Judy J-2 that worked like a champ for the first day I owned it. If I'd have reviewed it then...I would have given it a good strong 5/10 instead of the 1.5/10 that it lovingly deserved.:D
