Nearly a foot of it in my area, all of it in the last two hours; the buses aren't running and it's impossible to get across Glenmore in a car. I don't just need snow tires at this point, I need a SKI for my front fork!

Anyone else stuck in this?

Buglady

Oh, so this is supposed to be yours then. You can come get it any time...

Buglady,
I left Bowness @ 6:15 it was lightly snowing I got to work by the stampede grounds at roughly 6:45 and it was just starting to accumulate... might be a fun ride home. shoulda rode the MTB...

Yeah, when I let the dog out at 6:30 there was about an inch; by the time I headed for the bus stop at 7:30 it was just at the tops of my hiking boots, and when I gave up on the bus and slogged back home at 8 I was getting snow IN the boots.

This really bites because I'm supposed to be at the college working on a group project right now. Two of us are working on it by email but the third has been stuck in traffic for an hour and a half. The project has to be handed in at 2, and the instructor is one of those "well, you should have finished it earlier!" types who thinks that we should be able to predict family emergencies and freak weather events. (Emergency was mine, last week, and took me out for four days. Every other instructor has given me an extension on projects. This one thinks I should have planned better. Next time someone in my family has a psychotic episode I'll give them HER address.)

Wow. I was just looking at some pictures on the internet. Crazy. It's a lot like the dump we got last weekend.

Feel free to keep it down there....

When I left the house there were a couple of flakes coming down, so I took the road bike with the 23mm slicks - oops! By the time I got downtown, it was 3 inches deep and getting real icy:eek:

Hopefully they will clear the paths, or I guess I'll be taking the train home tonight

They're saying a lot of it should melt almost immediately. Do you have fenders? (Not that it would help that much - it's going to be ugly out there no matter what).

skinny tires, though, oops indeed! I have 1-1/4" slicks on one bike and that's as thin as I go :) (touring bike with mountain biek rims, quite handy really).

I'm riding my fendered touring bike right now, I retired the winter MTB a few weeks back...
I went for a walk at lunch and it was quite warm so I imagine most of the crap will be gone by the time I leave, My feet will probably end up soaked but the tail end should stay dry, here's hoping anyways!

BTW, is your prof going to give you a break with the 2 pm deadline?

Buglady

Yeah, it's melting pretty fast!

As for the project, we emailed it in with a timestamp of 2:01 (that was because I'm on a Vista machine and it took me an extra couple of minutes to navigate the file structure to FIND the silly thing to attach it). If she gives us any grief I'm going to the Dean.... I've had run-ins with her before.

Argh! It's happening again:(
I hope at least the farmers are happy about it.

Buglady

I am pretending that this is not happening. I am inside with the blinds drawn and NOT looking at the freaking blizzard warning we now have.

Very wise, I just got in having driven 3km home. (got the company van for the weekend because there was a last minute delivery in my area and I said I didn't want to fight the weather all the way back across town) The bridge decks are lethal, salting trucks are out and trying to make a difference, in short, it sucks out there. :(

Buglady

*sticks fingers in ears* LA LA LA LA LA I can't hear you!!!!

Oh wait, this is the internet, nevermind.

I'm a little worried about the farmers market tomorrow. It'll either be completely dead, or an absolute zoo, and I'm not sure I can handle either! That's assuming I can even get there, of course. Eek. I do not like driving in snow. (Westcoast wimp, here).

Sixty Fiver

Nice Alberta weather isn't it ?

It has been trying to snow here tonight.

Buglady

I want my money back. This wasn't in the brochure!

(oh, damn, it was. I see the fine print now. "Actual weather may change without notice. Provincial authorities not responsible for migraines or other weather-related head explosions occurring withing the Province. Move to Province at your own risk." Phooey.)

Buglady

why the heck am I still awake? I have to be somewhere in 7 hours. ack.

oneredstar

Looks like we only have an inch or so in Saskatoon. Still early though and they are calling for all that snow to hit us in the next day.

mercator

Saturday morning and it's still coming down onto a nice layer of ice.

Got a package from Nashbar in the post yesterday, so I guess I can finish putting my snow bike back together today. How's that for looking on the bright side?

Sheik_Yerbouti

I think I'm going to build a snow bike today. Single Speed Rigid MTB.

Sixty Fiver

Woke up to -9C and a little skiff of snow here.

Should make for some pretty riding.

Good move if you have the legs for it. (I don't) Low gearing yes? I just got in from shoveling for an hour, annddd... the forecast is for another 6 inches tonight.

Sixty Fiver

I'd go fixed for a snow bike...drops bars are good too.

I'm really trying to be cheap, I turned the old Norco Bushpilot into a single speed today with the oldconversion kit I have. Is there a cheap way to 'fix' a shimano cassette system?

Sixty Fiver

Horizontal or vertical drops ?

If the cassette is set up and you need a tensioner the old derailer is probably the best tensioner money can't buy... you can also use the derailer to set up a dual speed in case you want a snow gear and a road gear for when things are drier.

Sheik_Yerbouti

they're short horizontal drops, I'ts set up as a SS right now.

Sixty Fiver

The short drops work but can make gearing choices a little trickier as you don't have the same room for wheel adjustment.

All you need then is spacers and a cog for the rear cassette...an ss cog is better but you can disassemble a cassette if you need cogs and / or spacers.

Buglady

You guys are far braver than I am. No way would I ride in this. (It's not the snow so much as the 40 kph north wind. I HATE riding in wind. And yes, I know I'm in the wrong part of the world for avoiding wind...)

Oddly, the farmer's market was very busy yesterday, AND people were spending. Yay! Let's hope that holds today... I think everyone is in their spring "get out of the house" mode but it's yucky outside so they all went shopping.

Sheik_Yerbouti

Since I'm noticing that many of the people posting here are from Calgary, you should check out bikecalgary.org

We are now under a heavy snowfall warning and have gotten what looks like 5 or 6 inches already... I drove to the airport this morning at 5 am and would not advise driving on highway 2 south of Edmonton unless you really have to.

Sheik... if we're all snowed in you can update us with your ss conversion and mebbe show some pics.

Someoen needs to make hot chocolate here... :)

guh. a bunch of us started having these weekly saturday night bike races... the first one (last week) was perfect and it was sooo nice out. The last one, there was a good couple inches of snow underneath a sheet of ice. only four people showed up and we decided to do a not-super fast group ride around what was to be the race course. At one point, we all pulled up to a stop sign, i kind of skidded and fell off my bike, and as people turned around to look they ALL also fell off their bikes. It was kind of priceless.

Sixty Fiver

It is still snowing.

Damn.

I guess I will console myself by going back the the shop floor and work on that lovely old Dawes Galaxy.

:D

Snow_canuck

We were spoiled here in Winnipeg; temps in the 20c+ range. Now it's back to "seasonal" akkk. +6 and windy. :(

Sixty Fiver

It is still freaking snowing !

That Dawes... :)

Not only is it still freaking snowing, but I still have the freaking cold-front migraine that started on Sunday... :(

My exam marks are going to be a little less than stellar this year but I think they would be worse if I actually threw up on the papers, which I managed not to do, so there's that...

Pig_Chaser

Sometimes i think events conspire against my cycling. This week snow... next week I work out of town. It's so frustrating. Next time I commute I'll complete my first Mm of the year but that might not happen until mid May now :(

Sixty Fiver

Not throwing up all over your work is a good thing.

It look like we are getting our spring weather back...the ride yesterday was excellent and I rode all the way from 12thAve to 119th (27 km).

It was a little wet but that's why we have fenders.

Snow_canuck

S*it weather in MB today, wow GAHY.
