General Cycling Discussion - Portland ZooBombers make Front Page of Sunday Paper

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

the zoobombers, just like CHUNK and the messenger crowd and the stinky enviromental commuters and the crit mass geeks and all the rest... man, those guys are COOL.
bikes are rad. people who truly understand that bikes are rad and take that understanding to the next level (by riding tiny bikes down huge hills at maximum warp, for example), well, that's pretty rad too.

man, makes me miss Portland!
i mean Munich is great for riding (in most respects better than Portland - there is little need to "fight" for the right to bike: you just can) but that "cool" spirit of comradery among cyclists that Portland has is just not here...

I'd call it wrong.. but really, they're not doing anything but annoying a few people.
I'd say the residents deserve some quiet at that hour.. until I read
"One e-mail reminded the mayor that the neighborhood pays "heavy" property taxes. "The Zoobombers are disrupting the value and quality of life in our neighborhood," the resident declared. "
And I say they should put whistles on the bikes to create higher Db levels.
I'd be quite pissed if somebody plowed into my car if it was parked on the sidewalk. I wouldn't mind the screaming that much, but property damage is another thing.

Huh? Your custom user text says "One less car".

:D Gotta love it when you call someone out on contridictions!
I didn't say that it was my car, plus I'm far away from Portland, OR! I own two cars in fact, one from before I started to bike commute and one that I have for fun.
Anyway, if they are going fast enough and actually total a car, then there would truly be "one less car" and one more pissed off owner. :)

Then perhaps it'd be more accurate if it said 'one more car'.

A car can be totaled by a bike? Yeah right. Maybe damage, but never totaled. Besides, if this had happened in the 13 months since it started, don't you think that would have been mentioned in the article? Maybe a local can provide facts to counter this speculation: Is street parking even allowed on this road?
Even if it did, how would it be any different to any other collision? The responsible party pays for the damage. It's no reason to stop the zoobombers. Maybe if it started happening every week you'd have a point, but then again, it's not like the residents don't know it's going to happen every Sunday. I'd just make sure my car wasn't parked on the street on Sunday night.
Hopefully that puts a torch to that straw-man.
I'd just make sure my car wasn't parked on the street on Sunday night. In such an affluent neighborhood, I'm sure that the driveways are long enough the residents don't need to park on the street anyway.
The way I read the article, the parked car 'totaled' LBC's leg, not the other way around. Anyway, this is a tony neighborhood, and all the homeowners have plenty of off-street parking available, and although there are a *few* cars parked on the curb (probably a 3rd, 4th or 5th car that just won't fit in the drive/garage...), trust me, parked cars are not something you're wanting to aim for on your way down the hill on your little bike (or your tall bike, either)!
A car can be totaled by a bike? Yeah right. Maybe damage, but never totaled.
It's a joke, guys, I said if by chance the car is totalled, then there would truly be "one less car".. Tongue in cheek, nudge nudge wink wink say no more... :):):):):):):):)
Being in a rich neighbor or poor neighborhood makes no difference to me, whether they have long driveways or not, if it is legal to park on the street, then they have every right to park there. Just like us cyclists have every right to ride on the road even though there are sidewalks and bike paths and or parks.
It doesn't sound like they have accidents often and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt but I think people should have some kind of personal responsibility in trying not to damage other people's property uselessly. (Again, I'm not inferring that they did not make right with the owner, just that I hope they are responsibile for scratches that may happen, I have no idea from reading that article)
I prefer to bomb down MTB trails anyway, the only thing I can hurt is myself and my own property. :)
