GREAT track! The banks are on the steep side. If I lived in Houston I would spend all my free time there.
I was there last week on Thursday. It was a blast and everyone there is very receptive to people trying to get into the sport like me :)
Only thing is that the track surface is not exactly perfect... other than that it was still lots of fun!

I went there last week on Thursday too (with olie05). It was a lot of fun. All I can think about is going back there. They seem to be only open on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6-8pm. The people there are very friendly and helpful. The track surface is concrete and has a lot of cracks in it, but that didn't take away from the fun for me.

someone told me even though it's closed people gather outside of it and go on rides. i just got into fg riding and i'd like to have people to ride with.
alkek's a great track. the surface isn't the best, but it gets the
job done. the velodrome is open tue and thur from 6-8 (sometimes earlier and later)
as well as friday night racing. supposedly saturdays and sundays might open up too.
i hadn't gone since i got hit in july until this past thursday. three laps in and i blow a tire,
leaving me to meet face to face with the cheese grater resembling concrete. nothing too harsh,
and i was out there again on saturday to support walter in the big fix 500. so much fun.
everyone's really great and supportive, even of a bunch of us filthy, smoke tinged messengers
coming out to ride.
see you out there.
The race schedule on their website is not the most up to date. Email somebody from the site and check the actual race times. I've heard that supposedly they actually do keirin on this track but I have never seen it there and given how small and steep it is I have a hard time believing they could pull it off.
They also have some track bikes you can rent (I believe you first 5 rides are free on Tu and Th) but most are pretty beat up GT aluminum frames with loose hubs, wheels a bit out true and the like. If you have a track legal bike it will be a lot better to bring that.
Unless you live in Katy it's a PITA to drive out there, especially on weekends :(
