Touring - The man who cycled the world - watch on the bbc

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Quite a program and an amazing adventure I must say. Makes me want to hit the road.

If you go to youtube and search on "the man who cycled the world" you'll get all five parts of episode 1. Really good viewing, I definitely recommend it.

Just waiting for episode 2 now! Can't wait!

Mark Beaumont's main web diary appears to be here (http://www.pedallingaround.com/LDC/).

He used Marathon Racer (700x35) tires, with DRC ST-19 rims. From what I can gather on the web, these are 32h wheels, partially explaining why he had the spoke breakage problems (presumably the other part being the Rohloff hub, as mentioned in the show).

I can't troubleshoot for you guys, but thats what I did and it worked.

It seems it worked for one other forum member as well.

I'm working with dsl, with dail up I think its not the same. If you are on dail up forget it, its 230 megs.

Also what didn't work, what errors do you get? As I sugested use the iplayer app and download the content rather than stream.

The videos look like they are wmv (uses windows media player) and have drm like features.

The files expire, and delete them selves (or disable them selves) after some time.

any know what kind of saddle he used? it looks like it was bent downwards or does that come standard from the manufacturer? I checked the Koga Miyata website and it does not look like the same thing as what is on he's bike. I figure it is worth a look considering this guy biked around the world on it.

Selle SMP, they have a few different models. Not sure if it's the Evolution or Strike model, they all look so similar.

Saw part 3 and 4 last night (great program and story!):

After riding unmolested around the world and in one of the most dagerous places on the planet (Pakistan bordering near Afghanistan) he's hit by an old lady and mugged by a crack head in the good ole US of A... why am I not surprised. Even my 16 yo son was not surprised but embarrassed and disgusted. At least he survived, but chalk up one more on our cultural epitaph.

Follow diff_lock2's instructions, they work!

Why do Yanks have a way of screwing things up? I'm a Yank and having traveled extensively in the Pacific Rim I would take on an Australian or British accent to hide my origins quite often. We truly can be
the "Ugly American" at times.

I watched all of Episode 1 and am very disappointed that we can't get Episode 2 here in the US. I had tried all the links to YouTube and it is gone! I guess BBC had pull / clout. Bugger all!

I agree, but it also has to do with luck.
I'm originaly from Greece and having toured around Europe (without any problems), I was surprised when I rode with my wife through Northern Greece last year we got robbed in the middle of the night
Unfortunalty it just happens once in a while, we're just good targets I guess.

Yep excellent episodes. To all of you for who the youtube links have died try searching again on youtube. Recent tv programs regularly get put up on you tube and die just search again and usually someone has reposted.

Him getting mugged is the police's fault in my opinion.

He had bad luck in being hit by someone whom I hope is no longer driving. The local police who know the area should have pointed him in the direction of a respectable motel rather than one that would seem to be the local hangout for crack heads in a bad neighborhood.

OT: I'm a Brit who lives in the USA -and I've got to disagree. Many Americans don't screw things up, and are perfectly nice and hospitable. It might also be (don't know haven't seen it) that he was travelling through a bad area -of which there are some in almost any country in the world. I can assure you that if you travel late at night through some of the large British cities in certain neighbourhoods, you'll run a high risk of getting mugged or worse as well.

That's not to say there aren't bad representatives of the USA (or UK for that matter, just google "lager lout" and the "Costa Del Sol"!) just that things aren't as bad as all that. Though I do have to say when my American wife was travelling in Europe she used to say she was Canadian!

OK, so I'm grumpy that we here in the USA are getting cheated out of seeing this documentary. So.... for those people who can view BBC America, the only thing we can do is let the BBC know there is interest over here. For feedback (which actually isn't easy to find for tv programmes on the BBC site), here is a link:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/tv/faq/

go to the bottom of the page, and click on "contact us" on the very last line. Follow the instructions accordingly (I selected "other BBC" for channels as I believe it was shown on BBC Scotland, and did not provide a broadcast date). Here is my quick blurb I've sent:

"As a loyal BBC America viewer, I'm emailing to ask that you show 'The Man Who Cycled the World' on BBC America. I believe this is a fascinating human interest story and would be very well received. Please consider scheduling it on BBC America!

Many Thanks"

It might be worth a shot if enough of us do it.

Episode four is just not picking up for me.

__________

Mainly I'm trying to get episode four. Currently this appears to be the only thing working (downloading in progress)
http://xhgc18.blogspot.com/2008/04/man-who-cycled-world-e4.html

EDIT: This is quite a painful way to do it. Apparently you have to download three different .rar files per episode, and you must wait at least 95 minutes between each download ...?

If you were desperate to see this like I was, and don't mind going through a lot of hassle then here is another option.
The quality of these downloads are absolutely wonderful.

To open the files that you will download you will need WinRar. (http://www.win-rar.com/)

Each Episode requires you to download three sections, and yes, a wait of at least 95 minutes between each download.

Episode one (http://xhgc18.blogspot.com/2008/04/man-who-cycled-world-ep1.html) ( part one (http://rapidshare.com/files/106314691/The.Man.Who.Cycled.The.World.EP1.part1.rar), part two (http://rapidshare.com/files/106314826/The.Man.Who.Cycled.The.World.EP1.part2.rar), part three (http://rapidshare.com/files/106314891/The.Man.Who.Cycled.The.World.EP1.part3.rar).)

Episode two (http://xhgc18.blogspot.com/2008/04/man-who-cycled-world-e2.html) ( part one (http://rapidshare.com/files/107125098/The.man.who.cycled.the.world-E2.part1.rar), part two (http://rapidshare.com/files/107125323/The.man.who.cycled.the.world-E2.part2.rar), part three (http://rapidshare.com/files/107125646/The.man.who.cycled.the.world-E2.part3.rar).)

Episode three (http://xhgc18.blogspot.com/2008/04/man-who-cycled-world-e3.html) ( part one (http://rapidshare.com/files/107778834/The.man.who.cycled.the.world.part1.rar), part two (http://rapidshare.com/files/107779106/The.man.who.cycled.the.world.part2.rar), part three (http://rapidshare.com/files/107779351/The.man.who.cycled.the.world.part3.rar).)

Episode four (http://xhgc18.blogspot.com/2008/04/man-who-cycled-world-e4.html) ( part one (http://rapidshare.com/files/107915431/The.man.who.cycled.the.world-E4.part1.rar), part two (http://rapidshare.com/files/107915572/The.man.who.cycled.the.world-E4.part2.rar), part three (http://rapidshare.com/files/107915708/The.man.who.cycled.the.world-E4.part3.rar)

notes: When you click the link, it leads you to the file you wish to download, there are two options at the bottom of the page; "premium" and "free." Click "Free." It will then say you have to wait two minutes for a ticket. The two minutes will count down on the page, simply wait it out. If you have downloaded a file within the 95 minute period, it will tell you how long you must wait until you may download another file (this does not happen with premium accounts.)
After the countdown, the next page will open, giving you several options via which to download. I simply went with whichever one was already selected. There is a security field halfway down the page where you have to type the four letters/numbers which have a kitten (?!) imbedded in them. Next to the field where you inserted the letters there is a button which says “download via…[whichever source you chose].” Press that and you’re downloading.
You’ll need to have all three sections downloaded to export from WinRar. Once all three are downloaded, open the first file and the rest should go automatically.

Hope that helps the desperate people
