It's time to service my 2002 Bontrager Tandem hubs. How? I have the gears and disc adapter off. Now what? One LBS (doesn't sell Trek) told me they don't need service but I have a squeak I'm trying to get rid of.

Although I haven't pulled one apart, I believe the Bontrager Race Lite Tandem wheels uses a DT/Swiss hub. The star ratchet mechanism is very easy to service and should be cleaned and lubed every now and again, but does require the use of a very lightweight lubricant. Here are some links to servicing instructions:

The complete manual for the DT line of hubs that address bearing service, including the 540 tandem hubs, can be found here:

I am using a freehub "soup" from Paul Morningstar at Morningstar Tool Products

http://www.morningstartools.com

I injected it into my Shimano freehub using his Freehub Buddy tool. I have never had a freehub run so quiet and smooth.

I also have another bike with cartridge bearings. I am going to use it to lube the freehub on it with my next overhaul.
