Southwest - Advice for first-time visitor to Vegas?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm a bike commuter here in the Great State of Maine, quite a distance from Los Vegas in many senses. I've never been there before, but I'll be attending a conference over the week of June 2-6. I'll likely be staying in the same hotel as the conference is at, the Hilton, so the commuting will be limited to the hotel elevator. :) Still, I have zero interest in gambling, so I'm thinking of trying to get in some riding if I have any free time.

Any advice on where to ride, or offers of riding companions, would be great! It will probably be on a mid-week evening. Also, are there any shops that rent bikes, or do the pawn shops often have a bike or two cheap that I could "buy" for a few days? I can probably get a folder to bring along if I have to, but I haven't yet investigated what's involved in bringing that on the plane.

Thanks for any advice!

A bit warmer than riding in Maine!
Be prepared for 100+ degrees, very low himidity (drink LOTS of water). Ride early in the morning.
Hefty traffic on the Strip.

My recommendation is not to even attempt road riding as this is a city where cars seem to sometimes have rights of way over peds and bicycles. It's a very car-centric culture in Vegas and, well I don't think you need the risk.

I was just there for a conference (I do about 6 visits to Vegas conferences incl. Interbike). Why not try instead some of the great restaurants (like Osaka on W Sahara for Sushi). Also, you may try returning at the end of Sept if you can get into the trade-only Interbike show, which is simply fantastic; it may be worth seeing if you can line up housing for the event if you choose to return.

Actually it all depends on where you ride......I would definitely ride if I were you. Once in the scenic loop you will be treated to some spectacular views. The traffic is very low there during the week.

Thanks for all the advice, people. It sounds like the Red Rock loop in the early morning might be the way to go. I'll check out the rental places, too, although I'm a cheap *** so I might just try to borrow a folder to bring along.
