okay, so, after about 7 months on a michellin axial kevlar (the red one), i've decided to switch rear tires. so i grabbed a hutchinson carbon comp (IT FOLDS!!!) off the front of my road bike and took it for a test ride.

the first thing i noticed was how much more sticky the tire felt while slowing down and skidding (kevlar tends to "glide" and that's no fun for anyone). This tire really grabs the pavement a lot better than the last one, AND IT LEAVES WICKED SKID MARKS!!!

it's a lighter tire than the michellin, i think, but i didn't really notice much difference with respect to acceleration.

the one thing i'm concerned about with this tire is that it'll wear down fast. i don't think it's really designed to handle a lot of skidding around and such. and i even noticed some holes in the tread pattern that might be from glass or something from previous rides. no slashes. just little round holes....so i think it probably won't be long before i put this back on the front of my road bike and take the conti sport 1200 off the rear.

as a front tire though, the hutchinson really kicks ass!

i'll probably end up buying a new conti sport when i get around to it. the michellin is just a little too expensive (if memory serves) and a little too kevlary for a fixed gear.

so...anyone else have any tire reviews? and here's a question: why don't companies make tires specifically for fixed gear road use, i mean, aside from the armadillos which do, in fact, ride like bricks (i think they doubled the weight of my phil/open pro wheelset!! http://bikeforums.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif)

Your concern is very warranted. I'm using these on my road bike and love them. Very sticky, nice and supple but they wear quick. The back was starting to tabletop after about 500 miles. Ready to replace at 1200. Normal road bike use and always up to pressure.

If you can find them still, the old Conti Super Sport Ultra's were kick ass tires. Lasted forever and still rode pretty well. Some shops may still have them.

Skid Marks are designed for fixed gear usage.. I don't know how good or bad they are, they have a thicker patch of rubber so they will last longer with skidding though..
