Hi !

I will be doing a long ride this summer across the US to the West Coast mostly on the TransAmerica Trail westbound. I will go back east on the Canadian side, but from Winnipeg, I want to bypass Western Ontario by going south of Lake Superior. I'd like to have suggestions from locals to plan a safe route to cross Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Thanks for any help.

I've biked the length of Michigan's upper peninsula on both US highway 2 and Michigan state highway M28. I preferred M28, but both routes are perfectly acceptable and quite safe, in my opinion. I've also biked on US highway 2 through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and through much of Montana. I didn't have any problems on US2. There are smaller roads that parallel much of these routes if the traffic volumes of these major roads are a concern for you. You can get good cycling specific maps of these areas from adventurecycling.com, but they aren't really necessary.
