I supposes this should be in the health forum but since I'm getting older I wanted to go right to the pro's. ;)

Just wondering if anyone uses a multi vitamin & if so what are good ones? I know there are isles & isles at the stores & everyone says they have the best, but I'm looking for something that will help me fill in where I might not be eating well.

I drink a lot of water during the day & I wonder sometimes if maybe I'm flushing out some of the nutrition I should be keeping in there. :D

I also try & eat fruit & veggies but then I also eat the junk food (not as bad as I used to do) plus I try and drink protein shakes with powder & soymilk.

I look at the labels of the expensive multis and the store brand. They both have the same ingredients.

I've started taking them, buying them at the Whole Foods Market. The difference is the source of some of the vitamins. From plant sources rather than industrial sources, and beta carotene rather than Vitamin A. This causes the vitamins to be a bit bulkier. Which also means that I can divide my vitamin intake among several times in the day and run less risk of washing the whole thing away.

They are Source of Life brand.

Does it really make a difference what the source is? I've really been curious about that in a lot of things. What is the difference? Whether they are extracted from a plant or animal or synthesized, don't they end up being the same chemical?

Since most people have no need for those extra vitamins, it most likely doesn't matter which one you take. Don't overdo it, though...don't take more than the standard dosage...don't think that because one a day may be good, and at least do no harm, that more a day would be better.

There's a good article in this week's Maclean's. (http://www.macleans.ca/science/health/article.jsp?content=20080409_31755_31755&page=1) There are some new cautions for us old folks, and some benefits for the athletic.

Are isles in the stores kinda like islands in the stream?

I take a generic multivitamin with minerals daily even tho I am aware that there is no solid evidence that vitamins/supplements do any more for you than just eating a sensible diet.

Oh no!! The California Assembly is about to propose legislation that would increase the excise tax on beer by 30 cents a can or bottle, $1.80 a six-pack. :( Dang, we are going to have to get our vitamin P from another source.

There is a recent study which indicates there is a link between "heavy" multi-vitamin use and advanced prostate cancer:

http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/99/10/754

I take a multi-vitamin every other day. There are differences between brands, as some use bases and sources that are easier to absorb than others. But I'm no expert on the matter. I use NOW vitamins that I order off of the net, at about a 70% savings over what local stores sell them for.

I found a place that sells the 180 Qty bottle for around $13. That's a year's worth of vitamins, taking them every other day.

Fortunately it would have to go to the voters and I think it requires a 2/3 vote to pass. Tax the "rich" usually goes easy with voters that don't consider themselves rich or pay income or property taxes. A beer tax would hit more folks. I haven't heard, but how much tax on a 40?

Hate to say it- but unless it is prescribed by the Doctor- I do not take any form of pills. I get all the vitamins I need by eating correctly. How the slices of chocolate and sugar rich cakes become a necessity in that diet- I don't know but they work for me.

Not a beer lover but occasionally you have to indulge in it- but a bottle or so of Red wine seems to improve the diet aswell.
