I have been building up a touring bike and want to try a few short trips before I commit to a longer tour, I'm also planning some backcountry camping trips on my xtracycle later this year so I've been thinking of riding from San Francisco to point reyes and camping in the back country camps there. Anyone have a recomended route? Can I ride the trails to the camps with my 26" city tires? I have maps and have read about riding and camping there, but would like some opinions from actual cyclists. Thanks

Pick up one of these: http://www.marinbike.org/Map/Index.shtml

I'd probably get some cross tires, which should work OK on roads and that kind of trail. I haven't done those trails on a bike, but my recollection is it won't be super-technical MTB stuff.

I love that section of rt 101 to hwy 1. Loads of fun but lots of hills along the hwy 1 section. I would think that some 35mm would suite you fine and wouldn't worry too much about whether off road or city. A little sand on the trails into the Pt Reys but I would think (unless you have some fatties) you would struggle just the same having city or knobys.
Some camping in Pt Reys but there is also a couple (or three?) hostels along the way including one right in Pt Reys.

Good luck and have a blast!

The Bear Valley Inn in Olema gives a 15% discount to people who arrive by bike as well as other discounts. I've seen their add in LAB newsletters. And you can get to Olema and Point Reyes by bus with a transfer in San Raefel.

Hi!
Have you taken your tour there yet?
I can recommend some good routes into Pt. Reyes from San Francisco, I also biked into a campsite there w/ my GF on our touring bikes (there are only 2 campsites that can be biked into). We spent some time on the roads inside the Pt. Reyes parkland as well, and rode down the trails to the beach.
I can give lots of specific reports/suggestions.

Tx,
Sam

We ended up going from San Francisco to Samuel P. Taylor state park. The campsites in Point Reyes were booked for the time we wanted to be there. We are planning to try it again later in the summer, so I would love some suggestions. Thanks- Brian
